RockPlayer Divx Android Media Player hands-on [Video]

RockPlayerAn unreleased beta of an upcoming Android application called RockPlayer (aka RockPlayerBase) has leaked onto the Internet. It is a media player capable of playing a wide range of video codecs including divx, avi, mkv, mp4 and rmvb.

This is something that is much needed on Android as there are only a few handsets that have pre-installed divx compatibility but not really many decent apps (yxflash and Wuzhenhua excluded) that can play native divx files on the fly.

We tested RockPlayer and found that it played any divx file thrown at it. The Snapdragon processor probably helps to keep things smooth but we were impressed nonetheless. Given that it’s not even released yet, we can’t wait for the final release and we’d say right now that this is something we’d definitely pay for come release. You can download the unreleased beta here. Check out our hands-on video below.

Update: The public beta of RockPlayer is now open.

  1. Great app!!! works on avery video file I have on my pc….
Hope it stays as simple as it is now, great app, must have for your X10.
Sony Ericsson should have made one like this when the phone first came out.

  2. FINALLY!!!!! A media player that plays .MKV files!!! I have always prayed for an application just like this! 10 out of 10 for sure 🙂

  3. It is under hard development and will be published soon. There is a small group beta testing, and a group for user experience sharing at groups.google.com.hk/group/rockplayer

  4. I have downloaded and tested the application in my Xperia X10. It plays mp4, DivX, MKV,Avi and RMVB File formats. I also found tat it also plays VOB(*.vob) and Quicktime(*.mov) files. Its astounding.

  5. Can’t get it to work on x10 mini… Just exits the app, when I load a video… 🙁

  6. @water.e

  7. I downloded these video payer but not unabale to run the mkv file sound and vedio .
    🙁

  8. I’m running it on the HTC Desire & it’s great. It’s better than YXplayer & Wuzhenhua!
My Desire is getting a frame rate of between 22-30fps & it’s highly watchable with good audio/video sync… 🙂

Can someone tell me what’s “demo” about it? What’s the limitation?

  9. @eb76 – Connect your phone to your laptop via USB. Then go to the notification bar and mount the USB. You should then be able to drag and drop the file from your laptop to X10.

Make sure you have a file manager installed from the Android Market (I use Astro) and also make sure Settings –> Applications –> Unknown Sources is ticked.

Then go to Astro, navigate to the directory where you installed the file and tap it to install the apk.

@Anamnesia – I think the only limitation is the fact that it is a beta. However, I’m not sure whether it times out after a certain time, not had the chance to watch a whole movie yet to see!

  10. amazing, it can play HD video smoothly on Droid. Hope release version can play from stream (http, rtsp)

  12. It is a fantastic app. Is working on all video files I have. SE should integrate this in their next update.

  13. Tested on HTC Aria with several files, stock rom (2.1 SenseUI). Works fine with ~400×300 .mp4 and .mpg. Runs slower with a 700×500 divx and audio desynchronizes immediately. Runs terrible with .mkv – tested with 700×500 and 720p. 720p video runs at 2-4fps.
