SE Spain says Android 2.1 Xperia X10 update to launch during week 38

SE Spain confirm Android 2.1 on Xperia X10Sony Ericsson Spain has confirmed on their Facebook channel that the Android 2.1 (Eclair) update for the Xperia X10 will launch during week 38 (20th to 26th September). That fits with the “end of Q3” timeline we’ve been given previously – it’s good to know that this date still appears to be entact. No other details are hinted at, however we’ll keep you posted with further developments.

  2. Wow! I will be traveling all around that time, so I will be busy! Can’t update my phone by then. Anyway, I can read all the complain / whining about the early updaters here to see what will they cry for next? Maybe 3.0? He! He!

  4. There is a lot of talk propagated on forums that the jump from 1.6 to 2.1 is much bigger than that from 2.1 to 2.2. This is an absolute falsehood. I have been doing some fact finding and have discovered that this is totally untrue. There is in fact very little difference apart from the performance boost between 1.6 and 2.1. Live wallpapers are not exactly going to make that big a difference to the end user experience. Indeed most of the settings and functionality changes in 2.1 from 1.6 were compensated for by SE by adding road sync and the back up and restore app to the X10 family.
    Now with 2.2, there is a much to talk about that would improve the end user experience for example, the built in flash support (end user can watch almost all of online video content). Wifi and USB tethering straight out of the box. This will greatly reduce the need by many to root their phones as rooting can cause problems for some especially when it comes to software updating. I know because I have experienced these problems and know that others too have experienced the same from different forums. I could not unroot my phone by re-installing the software using SE update service or PC companion which are the prescribed methods of unrooting. I had to flash my phone with the generic uk firmware using omnius. Finally 2.2 allows you to install apps directly onto the SD card which is just great.
    Taking all these things into consideration, the 2.1 update from SE would totally useless unless SE as they did with 1.6 compensate by adding a few apps to perform these functions. This is unlikely with flash support and possibly the installation of apps to SD card, but I think an app for wifi and usb tethering would be an almost necessary addition to make their 2.1 update anything other than just defunct.

  9. Its good we are getting something but I am waiting for 2.2 as compared to 2.1. SE has already given much of 2.1 in X10 and with PandaHome etc. we can get those 11 home screens as well. The reason for 2.2 eagerness is flash player mainly. Heard on net that people have been using Flash apk file on 2.1 as well. Can someone confirm?

    2.1 is not useless at all. It’s true that there are not so many changes as in 2.2
    But now so many applications require 2.1 so at least we’ll be able to install them.
    That’s the major advantage of 2.1

  16. All this is fine and dandy, but the update to actually enhance(Scratch that: ADD) call quality; will be in this update? or is that a firmware update all together separate? Let me know.. Because I returned my Xperia X10 for the Catpivate(Rogers), and am in the window of getting any phone in any timeframe, but my 3 day stint with the device wasn’t too shabby; albeit the CALL QUALITY-Non existent, nadda, horrible, blecht? Lol. But I would definitely look into buying a used X10 while I wait my butt out for the Captivate/Torch.

    I see them on Kijiji for about 300.00, sounds better than adding a 3 year contract with “Hopes” of a call fix,

    Time to unbrand your phone. I’m on 3 as well and the firmware was just atrocious. I unbranded and now benefitting from longer battery life, more responsive touch screen and overall faster reponse from the phone.

  30. Regarding the upgrade of 1.6 -> 2.1 vs 2.1 -> 2.2, from a system-perspective the upgrade from 1.6 to 2.1 is a much bigger change. A lot of things have changed and improved in the libraries, for instance in the management of accounts & contacts. The number of colours supported. And more.

    From 2.1 to 2.2 brings in a lot of changes & improvements on the user-level but from a system perspective, it’s a smaller change. The JIT is of course a major change, although it’s been available in the Android Open Source repository since 2.0 or 2.1 already — it just wasn’t included in builds yet, because it wasn’t stable enough yet. So from a system perspective, it’s not a major change between 2.1 and 2.2.

    I’m sure hoping that S-E will bring 2.2 to our X10’s really soon after the 2.1 upgrade 🙂

  31. BTW – just tried a collegues HTC Desire, with 2.2. Smooth as silk. Everything performs so much better than on my X10! 🙁 I hope that the X10 will get similar smooth performance with the 2.1 / 2.2 upgrades. 🙂

  46. There are free apps for bluetooth. If you wait to buy the x10i with 2.1 it might take a long time for the new stock to get in the shops. Buy now and update you can get handsets for about 200 popounds on ebay.

  57. I don’t understand all the whining. X10 will get its updates. This updates will make this phone much stronger in the android market. It is the best looking phone. As for telling people to get the htc phones or the droid, not all carriers are gonna carry these phones so some people don’t have this luxury. The X10 is better then the galaxy s and the droid x aswell so those are a waste of time. The x10 does most of what the other phones do already so it only gets better with 2.1 and 2.2. Lastly i dont understand why people dont pay attention, but sony has already confirmed no multi-touch as the hardware doesnt support it. Multi-touch is not a big deal anyways. Be patient and good things come to those who wait…..

  59. @Ichiro, HTC sucks. Especially the model u mentioned HTC HD. Come on that is a Windows Mobile phone and the IE look like ****. Looks good on outside is no use when it is working ugly. And u mentioned Galaxy S, that phone dosen’t work like having 1Ghz, its so laggy. Before purchase I did hands on these phones and finally concluded SE X10 was the best. Stop polluting by suggesting or mentioning other phones especially HTC HD.

  61. 2.1 updates will make this phone bit stronger in the market but lack of multitouch still a bit of issues. All the Android 2.1 phone has multitouch at the moment and thanks to that there are alot more games are available for them where not going to on x10 which is massive disappointment if you think about it. It would stop you to experience full experience of Android because of that specially in Android, you can get Emulator and play your old favourite games.

  70. htc reskins the stock android launcher and throws in the HTC widget.. so its easier to port it all for 2.1/2.2… sony ericsson chose to adopt the UXP framework to create its launcher.. coupled with mediascape and timescape applications…. so its much more work for them to port all the heavy customisations over to 2.1/2.2… cut SE some slack… i think the timing for SE to release 2.2 should be much shorter since the differences in porting 2.1 to 2.2 isnt that taxing as from pre 2.0….

  73. The X10 has a TN LCD (just compare its viewing angles to the iPhone 4 and Droid IPS panels), so it almost certainly doesn’t display true 16.7m colors. HOWEVER, it probably does support dithering to achieve the similitude of 16.7m. My guess is that with 2.1, colors on the X10 will be better but will not match true 16.7m colors like the iPhone 4, Droid X, Droid 2, and of course, the Galaxy S.

    P.S. to all of the trolls, a vast majority of smartphones (HTC Desire and Nexus One included) DO NOT have true multi-touch. They have TWO-FINGER touch with software implemented multi-touch. I would be stunned if the X10 doesn’t do the same thing because even budget and old phones like the HTC Magic and G1 do this.

  76. While searching for software updates, I see a message on my phone which says:
    “You must use a computer to update your phone. Read more bout this on the Sony Ericsson web site”
    While doing this, I get another error while installing the driver – SA0101ADB Interface Driver.
    Need to know 2 things –
    1) How to resolve this error &
    2) What upgrade is this?

    Any help will be appreciated

    I am on Nokia and might want to try Android, but I don’t understand how these updates are working with Android. You say that SE Spain is launching the update. Does it means that if I buy my phone in China, I’ll have to wait until SE China is doing it (with all the restriction they apply on the phone) ? Or is your mobile company that is doing it, like China Mobile or China Unicom ?
    What if I buy the Xperia 10 in Europe, or any other country in Asia, but still live in China, how and when will I get the update ?

  86. Well folks, here it is. SE has cut short on its commitments to clients and to the future development of its own technology (Xperia Extend).

    Here is the update on the potential SE lawsuit I wanted to bring to life in Canada.
    We currently have ground to sue SE based on the two following and yet simple points.

    Xperia X10 was sold with the promise of regular firmware updates and the assurance that Xperia would evolve alongside Android OS (which is why we bought those bloody devices). This is considered as a contract with the clients and the providers/distributors of the said phones.

    Since this will not happen and is therefore contrary to what we were assured by the company, SE is in ”breach” of contract with clients and distributors.

    But the real point that could enable us to win in Canada is the following. Buying SE Xperia X10 will cause substantial losses to all of their owners (who will have to break their current contracts with carriers and assume the related fees, buy a new phone and finally get a new contract with same/different carriers). For some of us, the total amount in question can reach 1015$ (in my case:I have a 2 years contract with Rogers, so I have to pay remaining balance on my phone 315.00$CA, cancellation fees 400.00$CA, buying a new phone 200.00$CA and lastly new contract and related fees 100.00+, for a big total of over 1000.00$CA). It is easy to prove that those losses are intricately tied to buying Xperia X10, and they would not have occurred had we bought another device. Since our phones are a business tool and we will not be able to use it as needed and as promised, despite what SE advertised and assured, we have ground for a serious lawsuit.

    But to win this in court, we need to make it a collective case against SE, therefore proving without a doubt that we all suffer the same consequences due to misinformation and false promises made by SE.

    It is considered illegal in Canada to make false advertisement, and based on those two facts alone, we have serious grounds, but we need to stand together to win this and force SE to assume its responsabilities towards its clients.

  88. Mr Hyde, I think you don’t know much about these things. To prove SE is liable from losses you’ll have to show in every case that specific features from 2.1 were necessary for your business yet were NOT necessary at the time that you BOUGHT your phone. After all, even if they had launched the update on time it still would have been months of you using this phone on 1.6. If you can show that your business didn’t need android 2.1 until the time that SE was supposed to have launched it, but thereafter DID need 2.1, then you only have one more hurdle: proving that SE made a binding agreement to launch the update by a particular date. You’ll find no such agreement in any legal documentation you got with your phone, nor did SE advertise the phone as running 2.1.

    I’m annoyed about the delay too, but I’m not going to launch frivolous lawsuits because of my ridiculous sense of outrage and entitlement over a patch running late.

    I was involved in the lawsuit against verizon a few years ago about the bluetooth issue they had. we won the law suit and we’re awared a full refund for the hardware or a credit towards verizon.

    I find it funny how people now just assume we can get screwed on a promise (update) and buy with the knowledge of this promise and to only find out that it will be months later than expected. I think this goes past being mad, pissed or even vengeful. How is this ok?

    I’m glad to see so many of you just willing to sit and wait and think it’s ok. we are all becoming robots to big business and there shady practices. I for one bought my X10 with the knowledge of the update coming in a timely matter. We are now getting the update as a new update is being released.

    back to my point, SE pushed back the update and this has caused me to loose money, you may be asking how? well i run a few web pages about android and really can’t write to many articles as i’m now running an out dated OS. it would be like trying to write articles about xp right now, i can write a whole bunch of stuff but who really cares. It’s all about win 7 now.

    Worst part for us now is this, if SE does not release android 2.2 for the X10, my phone will be worth nothing to me as flash will not run below android 2.2.

    I could go on and on but really don’t see the need to beat this into the ground, as this is just a waste of all of our time. If you have the x10 and don’t care about the update good for you. I care and I will also care for you as this should be a crime.

    the more we allow big business to not be accountable the more we will suffer. Don’t get caught up into having to buy a new phone to get the latest os. My first SE phone was the t68i and SE updated the firmware a few times over the 3 years i owned it. Now it’s easier to just release a new piece of hardware and hope we trade in our perfectly good piece of hardware. We here in North America don’t have the plane like the rest of the world, we sign a contract for minimum 2 years or 3 in Canada to only have to wait 2 years to upgrade a smart phone, while in Europe you can do this every 6 months.

    I’ll stop as this will go nowhere in an environment like this, we need to keep everyone accountable…
