Sony Ericsson’s CEO hints at February release for Playstation Phone

Sony Playstation PhoneSony Ericsson’s CEO, Bert Nordberg, has hinted that it is indeed working with Sony Corp to deliver a Playstation/PSP Phone. “There’s a lot of smoke, and I tell you there must be a fire somewhere,” Mr. Nordberg said during an interview. “Sony has an extremely strong offering in the gaming market, and that’s very interesting.”

He then went on to say, “Sony is of course a very strong brand, and why shouldn’t we use that?” Mr. Nordberg asked. “Gaming, including content, is a very interesting proposition.”

The WSJ is reporting that the handset will carry the Xperia brand and will run Android as per the previous rumours we’ve heard. When asked why SE hasn’t yet leveraged Sony’s gaming resources, Mr. Nordberg said: “I haven’t dug into that history, but the future might be brighter.”

Interestingly, he said that the company plans to make lots of “noise” with a new product at the Mobile Word Congress in Barcelona in February. He also reaffirmed his commitment to the Android platform, saying that he expects it to remain the dominant platform in Sony Ericsson’s line-up for at least the next two years.

  1. I do want this to be my next phone although I am concerned about whether we have to compromise any smart phone features to have it though, for instance if there’s no g.p.s in this phone I’m going to be mortified.

  2. would the losers who keep going first please fuck off its a blog site not a race.

my opinions on this can be summed up easily… battery drainer. if its a smartphone/psp then the battery isnt going to last very long and thats gotta be the biggest failing with it

  3. @steve,

But, it is an Xperia phone and it is possible to buy a second battery with an external charger.

  4. This Sony’s response to the Nokia N-Gage. Only 8 yrs behind schedule. LOL
I would prob skip this device and maybe stick to the potential X12 coming.
I don’t have much time for mobile gaming.

  5. hmm, I don’t see what the CEO is seeing. If I want to play games I get a gaming system like the PS3 or PSP, but If I want a fully functioning android phone, I’ll get an android phone. yet again, its just little old me.

  6. @Ahmad
It is a fully functioning Android phone though…

It’s going to be about price and design. It will be a carrier subsidized PSP, with a 3G connection, and all the capabilities of your standard smart phone. I’m sure a lot of people would pay a little more for an X10 or an X10 mini if they basically got a PSP along with it.

  7. y these people not using there mind psp is already an awesome playing machine n now se is going to turn it in shit by makin it psp phone dont make it nobody will buy it nobody wants to play n talk at same time……lol with that big screen

  8. before doing something new you should think about your current people and update their software on time

I think the way the CEO puts it since Sony make money from games, lets make an android phone with Sony games. Its his points of view, yet lets back track a little. Sony PS3 could be at the top of Xbox360, but due to high price and Ken Kutaragi comments “PS3 will deliver and experience of having fancy dinner” made the launch of PS3 a mess, and made huge backlash to Sony. They still fix their goal on numbers, not good consumer experience that bring them these numbers. The X10 now have a price increase in Kuwait, which is where I live, because of the 2.1 update, even though it doesn’t support arabic language! Sony has good quality products, but they keep killing their reputation with ego. I hope they look into the case of Ngage, wasn’t very successful. I wish they put more attention to the basics of the phone, like battery life which in my X10 only lasts a day, with very few phone calls and email check. Interesting that the Iphone is making a lot of profit in here, and still there is no official retailer in Kuwait where Sony Ericsson does! Its because the experience people had with Iphone, let it have its place. The X10 could made it, and still can, just if they put attention to consumers and not to just numbers. it happened before, i wish it doesn’t happen again.

  10. Their “engineers” have to get the kits right or they will have nothing to show at the MWC.

Food for thought though — if they are Android platform games we can get them to work on our X10 yippie!!!! (sans multitouch)

Once we get multitouch on March 21 2011 it is a different story…

  11. Hi
@Ahmad , just a question , when did you got the update , i am too live in Kuwait and still waiting for update.

    Thank you

  12. IMHO Sony Corp. – if they want to be really competitive in the smartphone business – is in urgent need for drastical changes concerning brand and product image . Sure they can’t use WP7 because it incorporates two serious competitive brands – Zune and Xbox Live. Instead of this they should use their own brands and make Sony Playstation Cybershot Phone. Top class smartphone based on heavily modified Android version (they already went deep into modifying, so why stop in the middle of the road?) connected to PSN and equipped with decent camera using sensor from compact Cybershot series (just like Nokia did) . And last but not least ditch that ridiculous brand – Sony Ericsson. It already has nothing in common with good ol’ Ericsson. Sony brand would work better.

  13. Ok im a little confused.
Wouldn’t it be easier to just make a bluetooth driver for the x10 so you can use a ps3 controller.
Think about it, just make a bracket so your phone mounts to the controller.

SE x10 is a great phone lets focus on it for awhile guys….. 😉

  14. @XPA
I went to the service center, axiom, they made the update for me, pc companion kept saying my phone is up to date. I recommend you go there.

  15. I’d have to agree with Lukaszki. Make that phone with a 2400mah battery and a 16 MP camera with real digital and optical zoom running on the newest OS with VERY MINIMUM bugs. It doesnt matter if it’s thicker because this PSP phone is already thick, just as long as the mah on the battery is high then a LOT of people will be satisfied .

  16. you people dont see the big picture. its probably aimed at gamers and teens that lost their “favorite” phone when sidekicks fell off. kudos to sony for bringing it to the table
