Official: Xperia X10 family will not receive upgrade to Froyo or beyond

FroyoSony Ericsson UK have officially confirmed with us this morning that the Xperia X10 family (including the X8) will not see an Android firmware revision above 2.1 (Éclair). Whilst the company’s new line of Xperia phones will launch with Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), the X10 will not be supported past Android 2.1. The company instead plans to release smaller updates (like the multitouch upgrade) that will come in the next few months.

Sony Ericsson confirmed that the new handsets have a lighter SE skin and that its own modifications (including Timescape, Mediascape) have been decoupled to ensure that updates will be much more timely compared to what current Xperia X10 and X10 mini owners have had to endure. The current software builds of the X10 family are not built this way, which means Android 2.1 is the last version that will be supported.

  4. Not surprised in the slightest. Am running the FreeX10 Froyo Beta release from the great guys on XDA. Am supremely confident that they will sort us out, unlike the SE developers who are on to bigger and better devices in under 12 months of releasing there “flagship Android device” (aka the X10). I for one will never buy an SE phone again.

  7. Okay, we’ve officially been screwed over, and beyond. As much as the Arc looks extravagantly appealing, I now do not like the Sony Ericsson logo on it, I now much prefer an HTC logo, oh wait, I’m thinking of my new phone, It’s a proper good bye to SE now.

    And who the fuck would make a phone with specs as good as that then realise they’ve fucked around with the UI too much and now cant do anything with it. I think it goes a little like this..

  9. 2.1 would be fine for me, if they fix some performance issues. I mean, they have to cut the release plans somewhere. 2.1 is not that bad.

    We still get multi touch, and despite no Froyo, I am perfectly happy with my X10, I think it is reasonable to have 1 year of updates and then move on to the next generation

  14. They’ve gone further, on the SE Developer Blog, they say that every phone except the X10 will get ANT+ support. That’s right, X10 mini/pro and X8 will get the update, the X10 specificially won’t. Nice SE, I’m burned with 2 X10s.

  15. … long live XDA… I use a Froyo image right now, as soon as they fix the camera I’d say it would be much better than anything SE would come up with anyway… (Personally I was so tired of the lack of response from the official 2.1 image that I use that image anyway).

    Now the next phone will be HTC or Samsung… who knows? certainly not SE..

  17. Some people say that ohhh they’re happy with 2.1, yes if you paid like £100 pay as you go for the phone, but this is a bombshell of a price £450 or somthing like that you expect more or less the latest software to maximise the top notch hardware the x10 has.
    its like winning the lottery and then shopping at primark, you have the money but just dont use it
    . And on contract, im paying £30/month for 2 years, the x10 is now the faggiest phone around. Thumbs up to whoever thought of the plan for the X10.

  22. This is hardly surprising news. The only thing that bugs me is that they are yet again lying about their reasons for doing it. There is nothing in the hardware of the x10 that says it can only run a particular software i.e android with uxp heavily integrated. They could easily replace the crap we’ve got now with the less intrusive software.
    Dishonesty has become second nature for SE…they can’t just say they are not releasing any more updates without lying about the reasons why.

  28. So, rather than decouple Timescape and Mediascape from their X10 ROMs to make their update process easier, they’re just giving up on the line and saying “SCREW YOU” to all their existing customers? They should unlock the bootloader at the very least.

    SE stated last fall that they intend to become the biggest Android manufacturer, but there’s no way in hell that’ll happen with the crap support they give their products.

  31. I was disappointed in the company of Sony Ericsson, although it was a fan since 2003.
    Has not yet ended the year with sales beginning Xperia X10, the company refused it. Throwing their potreiteley. I think it’s not the right move. A lot of fans SE turn.

  36. Sad news indeed. I hope and pray that the group at XDA can release an update for the X10 mini to android 2.2 at the very least. This is also probably the last SE phone I am going to buy. I was pretty happy with Sony Ericsson until now. Can’t believe I advocated them.

    Android 2.2 and above has the option of installing apps on SD card, phone with 2.2 dosent require 1GB of internal memory. SE designed this so as to support till 2.1

    You are aware that the ANT+ requires dedicated hardware in the phone? No, it isn’t bluetooth, it is a piece of dormant hardware that they are enabling now. And our X10 is missing that piece of HW. X10 Mini/MiniPro apparantly are more suited to an active livestyle.

  45. To all the guys who wants to buy a Samsung instead: Please, don’t do it. They are worse than SE. I got one before. Sure, they are faster with updates, they have a great Display. But that’s it. The Galaxy just went from one major bug to another bug from release to release. So I switched back to SE. And trust me, better a X10 with few working feature, than a phone where you can not make a phone call or you car your wouldn’t connect anymore after some shitty updates.

  46. Hey, all of you who say we weren’t promised 2.2, let’s put it this way,

    iPhone users get all the OS updates for at least 2 models back. They can sell the phone to someone who doesn’t want a newer model, doesn’t want to upgrade a contract and doesn’t want to spend more money. I know a few people who sold 2nd gen iPhones when new phone came out and they covered most of the costs to upgrade.

    The X10 without a newer OS is worthless junk, and will be worth what SonyStyle was selling it for at Xmas, ZERO. Every other OEM said they would do 2.2 or better.

    As for the grammer of the blog, it makes no sense that the lighter SE makes it impossible to put on a X8 or X10 unless they need more RAM to run it than the X8 or X10 has. Is the 16mb short of 512mb on the X10 THAT important?

  47. @LARS — while the Galaxy S phones are buggy, they at least have noise cancellation and you can make a call in noisy environment, you can’t on an X10 at all, you can’t understand the X10 caller and they can’t hear you. As a PHONE the X10 is very poor. As a pocket PC/PDA? It’s pretty good.

  59. Even if the Arc looks awesome and really appealing, i will still not get it. Sony ericsson didn’t deliver as much as it was expected from the x10. I will not buy any other SE phone. I am so happy i got the samsung captivate for christmas. It is a HUGE improvement even if android is not as well costumized as the x10, i prefer the huge performance boost.

  62. SE can go stick something sharp up their behinds. What a total rip off X10 has been. Had it for 6 months, the freaking USB port is dying all the time (very common fault, designflaw that basically kills the phone within 6 months), upgrades are virtually non-existant.

    Basically a X10 will only work for 6-12 months then it is dead and you have to either service it or buy the new one (which probably have the same fault). And here’s the fun part, no more spare parts!!!! YOU HAVE TO BUY A NEW PHONE SINCE IT IS DISCONTINUED!.

    SE can keep their arcs and what-evers and stick it up their behinds. Im moving on to a brand that actually care about their customers.

  69. This was expected; the money lies in selling phones, and to do that you have to keep up with the competition. Supporting old handsets only costs money. That’s not say that as an X10 Mini Pro owner it’s not disappointing, just not a surprise.

    Apple’s case is a bit different – they make a lot of money on the app store, so it makes sense for them to keep old handsets useful for as long as possible.

If they admit their incompetence at developing decent propriety software (and further, their ability to revise/improve those; on schedule!) then the best act they could do is simply release their source code to the public(especially the bootloader). It’s their only chance to save most of their consumer base.

  77. I feel bad about the news. The only reason I wanted the update was because I wanted the flash support on web browser. I suppose I will look for a custom ROM from xda. If it works, I won’t change my x10 as I really love that phone, if not, I’ll buy the Desire HD. One thing is for sure: it’s my last SE. I’m so disappointed with SE.

  80. You all knew that the Xperia X10 was the first Android device SE made. It’s obvious it was an experimental phone and yet you bought it, I feel sorry for the dummies that doesnt know what’s going on… You should have done your research before buying the phone.

    I bought it because i wanted to tinker with the device and get familiarized with the device.. i’m glad to say that I was able to root the phone install 2.1 and JIT v2 compiler and make it in par with the Galaxy S. I’m planning on upgrading to android 2.2 once i see that the new custom 2.2 roms are good enough for daily use. once this is done it should be as fast as the nexus s or even better.
    that’s the power of open source softwares; there’s always a way to customize them.
    so for the complainers, i suggest going with an iphone and be stuck with what you expect and not that much room for improvements. LOL!

Still one core processor…This massage is a SE’s shame.     Sony Ericsson has slimmed down their Mediascape and Timescape elements; the former gets an optional media widget on the homescreen, while the latter is now slimmed-down and optional rather than mandatory to use. They’re also been uncoupled from the underlying Android OS, which Sony Ericsson says will allow them to upgrade the platform far quicker than on the X10 and other variants. One of the company’s 2011 priorities is to push out upgrades on a more timely basis.

  98. Well, I wouldn’t call myself a “fanboy” but I will say that this won’t necessarily influence my decisions regarding future phones. As I have mentioned in previous comments, I will wait until SE is done updating this phone with anything useful and then, once there is a stable 2.2 or later, I will go ahead and start using that. When I’m ready to upgrade my phone (likely in about 2 years) I will do research just as I did when looking at the X10. I will remain a follower of the X10 and the Xperia blogs which should give me an idea if SE does in fact bring out updates in a more timely manner. Since the ARC will be 2 years old by then, I will have followed it through from release to…well…final release I guess. Who knows what other phones might be out there in 2 year’s time. We shall see. I may even make an earlier upgrade if the finances allow it and there is something cool on the market. We shall see.

    Personally, this phone does everything I want it to and more. Admittedly, Flash support would be nice. Outlook support might allow me to convert my personal phone to a work phone. But overall, I can browse the web, watch many YouTube vids, follow Facebook and Twitter, take pics/vids, listen to streaming music, and make/receive phone calls. I can also play with other pieces of software which interest me more than they might interest most of you. I can’t complain about the phone itself, it’s great. I can complain about the lack of updates, but I didn’t buy the updates – I bought the original phone. It works better now than it did when I bought it…can’t say that about many purchases.

    am i annoyed by SE for the lack of support for this phone? Yes.
    but i do like the phone and with a custom ROM its an awesome phone.
    Timescape was a pile of shit and i’m glad to be rid of it but i am happy with my phone as it is on 2.1, the only thing its really missing is Flash and even thats not a big concern to me.

    i’ll keep modifying my phone until its due to be replaced and when that time comes i have my eyes on the arc as every other phone out there also has its own issues and i am happy with SE’s build quality.
    Lets hope they learned from this Android device and make future releases better supported.
    any of you guys had an X1? now THAT was a pile of shit with no support/updates whatsoever.

    Its understandable, SE has plenty of money thanks to users like us, spending about 400 quid in a device that in less than a year wont be supported. that is some way to make money fast and I mean FAST! because after all, people who does not understand about this, they will just get a new se once its out.

    Thanks god I’m stuck to a 18 month contract(!) and that I did not spend that quantity on the buy (understanding that you pay a lot of money to your net provider in 18 months but it is different).

  138. Guys, I do not know where the SE UK told officially that there won’t be 2.2 and above for X10s and X8, but I called German, Hungarian customer centres to ask about this, and they said all the same: It is under development, and it hasn’t been cancelled yet.
    If you think. Logical. What is the point, that they will jump from 2.1 to 2.3? Not logical at all. I am sure, around March we will recieve the 2.2 for our X10 family and for the X8…

  164. Well, I am not happy about hearing SE decided that they were going to not support the device beyond 2.1. X10 is less than a year old and already it is being kicked to the curb by Sony. Of course, Sony in all their wisdom once again shat upon it’s user base. Fool me once, shame on me….fool me twice…and well Motorola, HTC, Nokia or even Apple seems to be more appealing, since at least they tend to support their mobile phones as long as the hardware is capable of the updates.

  166. I got my 2 X10’s on 3 year contract in September with the promise of O.S. Upgrades for two years! I previously used S.E. K790 Cybershot and it was good. Given this insult to loyal S.E. customers, I will piss and moan all over my service provider and S.E. until I get some major concessions. The smart thing for them to do would be hiring someone from xda to fix this whole nightmare and “satisfy loyal customers” with relevant updates. Truly a small price to pay, keeping loyal customers happy and avoiding a huge P.R. FAIL! I’m not rooting or modfing until warranty expires in September. Who knows, maybe something will happen between now and then that requires replacement by service provider or S.E. themselves.
    I’m angry like the birds now!

    @ Mescht and Luke I think you have missed the point. You have to Judge Manufacturer with Manufacturer. Sesuxbigtime got it right, if the Hero can get Android 2.2 which is a lower spec and older phone why can’t Sony Ericsson do it. “News Flash”, the web is using Flash now which is supported by Android 2.2. We should be at least supported with upgrades for a year so 2.2 or 2.3 would be fair before they End of Life the flagship device

    Think about how the existing customers feel with your current roadmap.
    – Android 1.6 (Donut) was released in September 2009.
    – Android 2.1 (Eclair) was released in January 2010.
    – The Flagship X10 was launched with Android 1.6 in March/April 2010 (This is already 6 moths old).
    – Android 2.2 (Froyo)was released in May 2010.
    – The X10 was upgrade to Android 2.1 in November 2010 (This is 9 months late and some haven’t been upgraded yet)
    – Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) was released in December 2010.
    – Major upgrade support ends 5 January 2011. (That is 9 months to End of Life)
    – Xperia Arc is launched with Android 2.3 “Current Android build”
    On the Roadmap above all X10 customers how had faith in Sony Ericsson are used as Guinea pigs for 9 months. Is this what was meant by Bert Nordberg, Sony Ericsson’s CEO, saying “big surprises” are coming soon from the company over the next few months.
    I can’t believe that I have recommended countless amounts of people to the X10 and God knows how many they have recommended. How could I ever recommend Sony Ericsson to anyone else after you make the X10 End of Life in 9 months with 1 major upgrade.
    I want someone for Sony Ericsson to respond as this is a atrocious.

    Also do you know that the X10 is the only Android device with a flash that doesn’t work as a flash. Its a light for God Sakes.

    The lesson to be learned about Android is this. Yesterday I looked into a survey about brand loyalty amongst smartphones. While Android was the fastest growing segment, the loyalty of it’s customers actually fell. A lot of people who have bought an Android device would not buy one again. Want to know why? Its because of fuckers like those @ SE (others too, not only these like moto for abandoning a lot of phones, like samsung for failing to update timely, etc), who do not update timely/ outright refuse to provide updates.

    Android is a new platform, its about possibilities. One needs the newest platform to enjoy it. When companies do not do that, one’s experience is soured. Yeah, Tom pays 800- 1k USD for an android device, which Tom finds is lagging a year behind in updates with current android development and is finally abandoned. Tom’s Android love affair is over and he will probably buy an iphone/ nokia next and say ciao to Android.

    Android has one severe shortcoming. It is a FREE product owned only by Google, and has little regulation. So yeah these barstards have no problem raping it, usung it when they are capable of minting big bucks from it and will discard it when it’s not to users liking, because, hey, it was free and the company didnt own it, so no loss.

    Google should seriously review what companies are doing with their baby and not allow these half assed attempts to make android look like a joke. Letting these companies abuse what they do about android is the only way, that I can see, this platform is going to go down in flames.

    I got the phone for free while paying au$50 a month for $500 worth of calls and sms. Free calls to optus and virgin phone numbers and 2 gig of downloads a month. I was promised 2.1 and I got it (late but better then never)
    I completely understand about flash not being supported but i donated a few coins to xda and hopefully as a last resort they’ll do what they do and make a lot of people happy.
    All im saying is, unless you sign a contract believe nothing you hear and half of what you see. Maybe you should hit your phone carrier up for a better deal

I can tell you right now, looking at the update patterns from all the manufacturers, HTC wins by a f*cking mile. Samsung, though still good, has problems updating some of its devices (GPS problems, SD memory going missing) despite its great AMOLED screens. Motorola, look at the Milestone, not even on 2.2 yet despite its brother Droid has been enjoying it for the last how long? LG, not too confident about the quality. Sony Ericsson will never get my money again. There is no forgiveness. I will do my damn best to make sure no one around me buys a SE phone from here on out. SE, go f*ck yourselves.

    -at&t received the 2.1 update on October 31st,2010.
    -I finally got to talk to a Senior Customer Supervisor at at&t with name Anthony. He acknowledges that indeed they have the update but at&t is STILL performing testing on it before rolling it to all of us at&t users.
    -He apologizes saying that it is well known that at&t over-tests and holds on to software updates this long because they rather forward an update with virtually no bugs, and he says that in their history this is what works best for them financially as a company….to screen and test software updates to the grind in order to avoid bugs and hence avoid a larger number of inquiries in the future due to bugs associated with new software put out.
    -I then asked him : How is that over-testing serving me well if I am working with an outdated android 1.6 that does not allow me to experience the android market as most other android users do?

    So, bottomline…It is OFFICIAL …at&t has the 2.1 update…only not releasing it yet cause they want to make sure its as bug-free as possible.

    Call at&t and give them HELL…
    Demand your 2.1 update from THEM and NOW!

    Sony Ericsson is out of the loop …for now…

  205. Well I must say I am very disappointed that it seems Sony Ericsson have decided 2.1 is enough for this phone, like most others posting here I expected/hoped that SE would have the same software upgrade policy for Android as their competitors??!!

    I have this phone on a 24 month contract so by the end of this period the software will be well out of date (it seems). The phone cost me approx £300.00 plus the contract cost of £10 per month and I was informed that this phone was a premium product at time of purchase, however after 6 months of ownership the SE support certainly doesn’t seem premium compared to competitors like HTC and Samsung.

    I am not going to resort to bad language, however I must say I am extremely disappointed by SE’s lack of support for their customers. I will say that I will bear this in mind (like many others in the same position) next time I come to renew my contract. Sony Ericsson if you want my repeat business, please review your software update policy for the X10 as it is a great phone that is being let down by poor support. You must be aware that phone networks are supplying this phone on 18 month/24 month contracts so your support should continue for this period also. Especially at these prices!!!

Xperia x10 I’ve have right now is my first worst smartphone that only runs android 2.1, poor battery life, and has 312 mb ram and would not even upgrade it to 2.2 ; compared to samsung galaxy s which runs android 2.2 and have a 512 mb ram and might furthur upgrade to android 3.0 gingerbread.

    I really hoped that SE would rethink again and upgrade xperia x10 to 2.2.

  234. I saw this coming. The fact that the 2.1 update was delayed for the longest time told me that X10 users won’t see 2.2.
    Besides, you all act shocked. I don’t know why either. Even if X10 owner DID get Froyo, you wouldn’t see it until the 3rd Quarter of 2011, and by that time, 3.0 will be out. So why complain? Just because your faced with the truth?

    I mean, yeah you guys are pissed off. But come on, everyone knows that phones are pratically outdated in 6 months (or sooner). Face it. If they kept updating their old phones to newer firmware, that can completely ruin the sales of their new phones. You have to also view it from their perspective.

    That’s why I got rid of my X10 before everyone found out it won’t be updated. I stick with HTC now 🙂

  244. I seriously feel I have been messed around by SE. The phone is fine, but the software has been dodgy from day one, the update helped a little but not much, the custom build is just not a good enough quality, and the battery life is worse (and I really mean this) that the original G1.

    I agree with the people who have said this is their last SE phone. It’s all we can do – and it’s not enough. We’re just shouting in an empty can. They really, truly don’t care at all.

  249. One major update from 1.6 to 2.1 and only after 2.3 had already been released on other Android phones. I understand that the Sony Corporation has stock holders to please, but damn, if they want the SE brand to return to its past and turn around their dwindling sales records…this is not the way, they just damaged a huge market for their phones and Android users tend to be of the creed that talk and share information like this, which isn’t going to be good marketing for Sony. A friend recently posted an article about a new SE phone and I warned him against buying it.

    Also, it should be in Androids best interest to control how companies use their software, this doesn’t only leave a bad taste in my mouth over Sony, but Android too as this is my first Android phone. Yes, yes, I understand it isn’t Androids affair what Sony does, but flaky practices like this shouldn’t be worthy of the Android brand name, I’m a big gadget person so I’ll be open to second chances here…but I can see how many less technology inclined people will simply take what Sony has done here and simply say “Android SUCKS!” and go over to Apple, RIM or Microsoft.
