There are two "different" O2's in the UK. One is through O2 themselves and the other is through Carphone warehouse. Carphone warehouse only sell debrenaded phones no matter what network. I have my X10i from Carphone Warehouse and i was able to update the day it was mentioned on here. I can only assume that O2 sell phones with some branding on that may delay the updates.
I'm on o2 uk and tonite I got notification of an available update. It took a while via wifi and it stated whilst it was happening that the phone would not be available for use and emergency calls would also be unavailable. It carried out the software update and switched off and back on. Can't find anything different, what should I be looking for?
Sinbad, for all intents and purposes, when someone on herea sks you about which network you're on, they normally mean the handset, not so much the network itself (unless the question is about network things like Voicemail etc). SO Basically, you're on a debranded phone, not O2 for the purpose of this forum topic - hence why you probably got eh update quicker than the "O2" people.
No problem. hopefully that clears up the confusion why people who are on O2 think they have been missed out! All I can say to everyone is to be patient. It's an important update that also introduces a change to the UI (Timescape theme) and I can't see SE allowing there to be different 'versions' of their phone on the market - So I suspect they have insisted to all networks to introduce the update - the question is when.
This is probalby an issue that's going to come up time and again and so if you are one of those that really dont want to wait for your network, then go ahead and debrand your phone. There are plenty of posts around telling you how, the (small) risks and how it affects your warrantyt (if at all) etc.
If you're on the network branded and don't want to debrand, then you'll just have to be at the mercy of your network. There really is no point in asking 'when is...' as no one else will know (unless the are poeple high up in the networks on this forum!)
This is not a rant, but a guide for noobs more than anything!
Ok, so I am an O2 customer direct so at this time have no notification of an update, as discussed and expected by the sounds of things.
Now I am new to all this, never had a smart phone before etc. So could someone please advise, who already has the update, what benefits features to expect?
I read somewhere that there was something about a 2.1 firmware on the horizon for the x10....is this what we are talking about here? As I heard the 2.1 firmware is meant to help increase battery life and also implement HD video recording...sounds rather cool.
I updated my software yesterday after getting fed up with the notifications popping up on the top tool bar.....was told the update caused problems by one mate and that it was great by another....so gave it a whirl last night.....
My advice is don't worry about it, the so called backup and restore function, lost half of my contacts, all my music and settings....and only after the 5th try to restore all....I got my apps back.....now it feels like a new phone with all my personal set up to do all over again.....a right pain....
Definately will be thinking twice next time...
On O2 also.....I think its in your settings on the phone....notifications of software updates....nothing to do with O2 really....
