Unable to navigate

I just got my Xperia and am like a kid with a new toy! My excitement turned to frustration when after I had edited a contact and pressed done - I could not get out, that is, the Menu/Home/back key does not work! No lights, nothing. The top screen has Send Msg/Favourite/Edit, bottom Info. I want to get out back to the Home page but cannot so I ended up shutting down and on again for each and every contact! Have I missed something here...
