I have tried several video conversion methods and finally come up with a super app to convert with almost no questions asked. I will place a hyperlink for you to take a free trial. My free trial went so well I purchased the product for 14 US dollars after my first test, which only took about five minutes.
First let me talk about the bad. 1) Kingconvert - DVD to SE X10: TOTAL WASTE OF TIME! I actually purchased this product for 28 euro and it was a complete waste of money. I spent days trying to work out a few different issues and regardless this product will not work correctly. the company finally sent me a new file to down load which my McAfee warned was loaded with spyware, I down loaded it anyways,, still did not work. I have since asked for a refund - so far no answer - but it has only been one day since I asked for the refund. We shale see. 2) CloneDVDmobile: I could not get this product to work with my X10. I ran several test via the free trail. I could probably get it to work, but gave up after several unsuccessful attempts. 3) Nidesoft DVD Ripper v5.0 - Looked it over and did not care for the user interface.
Here is what I went for: Aura DVD Ripper Professional http://www.aura4you.com/aura-dvd-ripper.php - In fact when you buy the License to use this product you get unrestricted access to ten or so different apps. Though there was no preset profile for the X10. I selected the profile "google adroid". The only thing I changed was frame size (800x480) and bitrate (2500 for my first attempt), and selected English. I dragged the video and dropped it to my X10 once it was complete (about 140 minutes) and the finished product is incredible! The movie I ripped was Ronin. If you have problems ripping check out "AnyDVD" @ http://www.slysoft.com/en/anydvd.html, I am sure this will easily fix any issues you are having with DVD's that you own, if you know what I mean !
1) Place DVD in PC's DVD drive 2) AnyDVD (2nd hyperlink) runs automatically once DVD is placed in drive (takes a minute or so) and DVD is rip ready 3) Open DVD Ripper (app from first hyperlink) 3a) Click Add DVD (once movies is listed in the center make sure only the top file is selected, the one with the whole movie, and not any others that may appear) 4) selected Google Android from the profile menu 5) Change Language to English (not auto), change Frame Size to 800x480, and change Video Bitrate to what ever you like (i used 2500 on my 1st rip)(second RIP at 1500 is being ripped now) 5a) Click convert and you are on your way 6) Once Rip is complete right click movie from menu on left and select open. 7) Connect X10 to your PC, open my computer from start menu, and drag and drop movie file to your X10
This is so easy my five year old could do it! The video I did was incredible, and I mean incredible!!!!!!!!! It took me 140 minutes to RIP the film Ronin, which I own! The only negative is, until they add the X10 to the preset profiles the picture doesn't make it all the way to edge of screen. However, it is only a millimeter off on all sides. I can live with that until the X10 settings are added.
I will try converting formats (avi to MPEG4) once I have completed my current RIP.
Just to add in to this, if you use a ripping tool that has a crop facility, such as the one I have (PS3 Movie Maker), you're able to trim away the black borders on movies at the top of the screen. This allows for excellent use of the 4 inch screen and is AWESOME~!
The one I listed above also has a cropping tool. Maybe cropping would have gotten rid of the very very small black boarder. I will be the first to admit that I am not very knowledgeable in the ways of ripping, which is why I like this software so much, it is straight forward and easy to operate. So I haven't mastered the cropping yet. Since I know the X10 will be added to the preset profiles I think I will just wait instead of changing the settings I used.
By the way I ripped the wedding crashers (which I own), the film was in Wide screen, so there is the black on top and bottom. I didn't think of checking it before hand and cropping from there (so I will run a few tests cropping this film). Also, even though the file was smaller than my first rip it took nearly four hours. The picture and sound are still fantastic, but I obviously have more to learn about using all the features.
Here is the temporary fix that tech supprot gave me. Use the "PSP MPEG4 Movie" from the preset profiles and type in 480 x 854 in the frame size, and start conversion from there. I will give this try and see how it goes. I will also try to crop out future Wide Screen versions.
If you can "get" adobe media encoder cs5 do that, I have the real version and it can convert to anything - i can get a 4gb file to 300~400mb still looking good (h.264) with 854x480 rez
course if its an xvid ME doesnt like that so you may have to use virtualdub (totally free) to convert it to an avi first... kinda lame but if your desperate for phone vids it may be the quickest option...
although i havnt given the rockplayer a shot, that could solve it all
