Reduce Lag

Hi there,

I am new to the forums, but I know that this problem is definitely not new and probably there have been multiple threads discussing it, so I have searched the forums, and am not sure which thread is the best resource for this:

But I am on Android 2.1 (SE's original build) and on the Rogers Network in Canada.

My phone has some serious lag issues (and I hardly install any apps...not even using task killer).

I have the following problems:

1) Text messages sometimes don't send, and definitely not receiving a wackload.
2) menus are extremely laggy and text message menus and all other android native menues keep freezing on a frequent basis - says "the program needs to be stopped" (turned off all animations)

a) I know that there is ways to root the phone, perhaps someone could provide a link to the easiest way? and I am just looking for a way to reinstall my android 2.1 with the most efficient less stable build out there and was hoping someone could shed some light. I know there is a 2.2 out there unofficially, b) and was also wondering how good this build is (with no camera functionality yet it seems)

Thanks in advance for any insight guys!!!

First root with this, just connect your X10 with USB Debugging and press the root button.
Once rooted you can also clean the phone of bloatware with the Flashtool.

Now install Stericsons Busybox Installer from the Android Market, run the Busybox Installer app and confirm installation of Busybox.
Now download the xRecovery apk from here, run the app to install xRecovery.
Now download JIT v2 enabler from here and flash with xRecovery.

All these links contain more indepth instructions on how to do all of the above, if you need any help just ask!

thanks JayJ!

How does upgrading to 2.2 fit into this? Is it better than just doing what you mentioned above?

With JIT v2 enabled in SE 2.1 you you'll increase the system latency and speed up the phone but FreeX10 Froyo is another thing altogether.FreeX10 Froyo is a custom AOSP ROM and is also flashable via xRecovery, that's where the similarities end though.
AOSP Froyo is in beta atm so not 100% but pretty bloody good IMO!
The major issues are no camera LED flash from inside camera app (I use a widget to turn on LED before entering camera) and no camcorder atm.
It's my everyday ROM so I live with those issues.
The benefits, faster than SE 2.1, no Blue Rachel UI, native Froyo JIT, native Froyo app2sd, Adobe Flash and other 2.2 apps like Chrome to Phone etc.
If your thinking about FreeX10 Froyo check out my thread in the general subforum and read this, FreeX10 Froyo beta4 by Zdzihu.

Also was wondering, in case i mess up flashing the x10, is there a backup I can make of my existing OS so that i can boot that one back if needed?

The fact I use Froyo as my daily ROM should answer that for you! lol

As for back ups, root and install xRecovery before you do anything, xRecovery can do nandroid back ups.

I'd say do as above, root, remove the bloatware, install xRecovery and enable JIT v2. Now have a play for a few days and see if it improves the phone, plus if you ever need SE2.1 again like to take HD video etc it'll be faster.
As for back ups, once xRecovery is installed and before you flash anything including JIT use xRecovery to do a nandroid back up (steps on the xRecovery thread posted above).
With the nandroid back up feature if you make any mistakes you can revert back to a previous back up and you can go to and from back ups, once you have SE2.1 backed up and you've installed FreeX10 Froyo and backed that up too you can switch between the two.
Example: your running Froyo but your out and want to take some HD video, reboot and restore SE2.1 back up to use the camcorder.
NOTE: I would recommend whenever you restore a back up you do a Factory reset (Full wipe), Wipe Dalvik cache and Wipe battery stats via xRecovery.

Hope that helps.

Try updating through SEUS (Sony Ericsson Update Service) first, I just read something about an update for Rogers?

X10a Generic
Generic version 2.1update1 build 2.1.A.0.435 (MD5 : 0C67A08A4B120EBA87E395865F431E81)
Generic version 2.1update1 build 2.0.2.A.0.24 (MD5: E592508FC714A9F2CB6BDC41914ABC81)
Generic version 2.1update1 build 2.0.A.0.504 (MD5: F3735BF4D48ED4BBA8BF5BC60CD1D34C)

don't know which one i should be downloading (above). I assume that I need one of the three above in order to: "clean the phone of bloatware with the Flashtool"

Here's latest update with Dualtouch for X10a, flash with Flashtool.

You do have an X10a yes?

Did you try SEUS?

thanks doing this now. man, the steps look complex, lots of info to read. but hopefully its worth it . I am sick and tired of SE 2.1 firmware...

yeah, i have the x10a, and i downloaded the file from ur link now. Not sure what procedures to clear my phone of bloatware tho using the flash tool...

I guess what I am confused about is how downloading the file u just linked will help me clear my x10 of bloatware

thanks so much JJ

You should be able to install that update via SEUS (download here), if not then use the link and flashtool.
Then use flashtool to root and remove bloatware or you can remove bloatware with Titanium Back Up from the android market (free).

hey JJ,

thanks, will definitely try 2.2 now, let me give this JIT a couple days to see how the phone is working.

I was wondering, if i do install 2.2, does that mean that i will need to backup all of my downloaded apps? Or does the ROM just somehow keep my current apps and stored data (notepad text files for example), or do i need to go through a backup procedure?

Also, do you know if there are any 3rd party teams of ppl working on porting 2.3 over to the xperia x10? I know the multi-touch update was probably SE's last official update for the x10...

Also, do you know what they are talking about in the froyo 2.2 thread about "data2sd"?

Wish I could add rep to you for all your help, you have been amazing, and its great this forum has such a active user who is this knowledgeable. mad props JJ!!
