The boffins over at Ericsson Labs have shown off a 3D landscape API & SDK that allows developers to create some funky apps with 3D maps. It looks quite good with navigation reasonably smooth. This is likely to strain the CPU, although the Snapdragon chipset copes admirably with the video maintaining 30fps.

Let’s just hope we get this functionality out of the box on launch (whenever that may be…) We’ve attached a video of this in action below that shows it in action.
