Xperia X10 Android 2.1 update benchmarked

Xperia X10 Android 2.1 update benchedWe’ve heard all kinds of news surrounding the Xperia X10 Éclair update, but what we haven’t seen was a definitive list of benchmarks versus Android 1.6. Swedroid do the honours here after they managed to get hold of some pre-release Android 2.1 firmware directly from Sony Ericsson.

You can check out the charts below, but it’s clear to see that the new update brings significant performance benefits over most of the tests. The only test where it scored lower (marginally) was the Neocore 3D benchmark. In their tests, Swedroid also show that the amount of working RAM is now 280MB versus 275MB previously. They also gave a video hands-on of the new firmware that we’ve attached below.

Note: The phone they played with was running 2.0.A.0.497 firmware (the latest certified build is 2.0.B.0.127) with baseband of 2.0.44 and kernel of 2.6.29.

  1. neocore 3D is useless for most devices testing…..
it does not deactivate the VSync of the devices so it won’t get higher than screen refresh rate of device,….on Hero (also also on 1.5) and X8 it shows higher scores than on X10…. please do not compare that cause it’s more a tec demo than a benchmark

  2. Well this is promising. Any extra performance is welcome.

I just hope my carrier is on the ball with getting this update rolled out.

  3. i just hope the phone providers over here in uk decide to act quick on there own branded versions of x10 cos tmobile customers are waiting til end of november for this

  4. guys, you need to be more careful with the wording… “benched” gives a whole other connotation than “benchmarked”.

  5. Lol, didn’t even realise that the title may be taken the wrong way. But given the sensitivity surrounding the update I’ve changed the wording! :p

  6. display response has increased… wow.. furthermore mediascape n timescape will also be smoother and quicker… good.. keyboard is also improved.. nice.. all changes are nice but SE plz make it available.. make.available!

  7. The title of the post should be , ” Xperia X10 Android 2.1 Update BENCHMARKED”, not benched. Those are two different words with two different meanings.

  8. @Alan & Steve: I am so with you about the title. Holding myself from buying this device until 2.1 is out, this title almost made me think ” Not again” .. In my IT world of consultants, being on bench means indefinite delays .. 🙂

  9. Half-assed update for a broke-ass phone from a weak-ass company.

SE YOU SUCK. STOP HAVING A HEART ATTACK AND RELEASE THIS OUTDATED USELESS UPDATE ALREADY. THEN START WORKING ON 2.2. MAYBE WE’LL GET THAT WHEN OTHER PHONES ARE ON 4.4.

  10. When you get to upgrade to x10 eclair! and there will be androids 6.0! and us? just updated to 2.1 and 2.2! Sony disappointed me …

  11. Just finished talking to guy at sony style store (I’m with rogers canada). he said udate will be available for canada on nov. 2nd. I called bullshit but he was very adiment that nov 2 would be the day. He even showed me the e-mail from sonystyle

  12. @ boonus

People are full of shit, I don’t buy it either. I talked to a guy from Rogers a couple months ago, he assured me the update was coming this October. Nov 2nd is impossible. Rogers has to meddle with the update and add their own crap to it so best case scenario would be late Nov, early Dec.

  13. @ Richy
not a valid source, someone was impersonating Rikard, the official spokesman of the SE blog, on the blog titled “Update on Updates” and mobileburn.com took his word. Its SE fault to keep people in the dark for too long, things will get worse if it continues like this.

  14. Acoording to Rogers internal memo, Rogers is targeting Nov 7th for the canadian release. i’m fine with couple of more weeks.

  15. @bandit

well he claims that rogers is pushing the update due to the thousands of complaints and returns. plus rogers idnt do much to the firmware on 1.6 other than changing the load screen.

  16. U fucking be kidding me!? First give us an update and then show teasing videos. Where is that fucking update???????????????????????????????????????

  17. People may find this strange but the preview of Angry Birds running flawlessly is def the dopest part of that video, could care less about updates to Timescape, amount of screens or Camera functions etc

  18. Ahmad – cheers mate, didn’t see anything elsewhere about it so definitely not a good source…

  19. SE is retarded REALLY! What a bunch of goons stealing everyone’s money and talking complete BS after the fact. I’ll never buy another SE Phone EVER again after this SHIT! Rogers can take this POS back and recycle it into something more useful like a dildo for FUCK SAKES! If I ever met the Dev’s of this phone I would submerge them in my URINE! Face Fuck Them and leave them for DEAD! SE CAN ROT IN HELL!

  20. THIS BLOG IT TOTALLY RETARDED! SE IS TOTALLY RETARDED! Shut the fuck up and dont post any new firmware blog until it really comes out! R U idiots? SE retarded brainfuckers!

  21. There are a lot of very strangely angry people here. I wonder how much frustration and stress you must have in your life to get so worked up and hateful over what is in reality a fairly trivial issue. I mean, what does it ultimately mean to you that you are not running the very lastest version of your device’s operating system? Does it really impact your life, psyche or ability to use it for what it is? Admittedly, flash supprt would be fantastic, but I don’t honestly see too many other hard, tangible benefits of 2.2 over 2.1. Even HD video isn’t that alluring given a phone lens, and that’s a device/brand extra rather than an Andriod feature. For me, multi-tap would enhance my use and enjoyment of my X10 far more than anything I see in Froyo and we all knew we’d never get that on our X10s, if we’d done the research. Lets face it, most of the ranters on this blog will be considering their next device after xmas anyway, as it all seems to be about one-upmanship and having the very latest thing for the sake of it than enjoying a beautifully designed device that, in my experi’a’nce works as I expected when I bought it, and very well, thanks. Get some great apps like ADW.launcher and stop moaning already.

  22. I agree with Makka, i like my phone, its only the speed and a few things that niggle at me, and it looks like 2.1 will fix this, it will be a breath of fresh air.

  23. @Clozecall, pretty funny. SE is pretty slow on everything i agree but if your a SE fan like i am then just get a new phone and stop b****ing about what SE does. If you can’t hang with the delay then just go buy a new phone. I don’t want to back up SE but i don’t want to hate on SE either, so stop posting back comments and hope for the best.

  24. ooopsss… omg bad typing, i meant to say. SE is pretty slow on everything i agree but if your a SE fan like i am then just wait it out. If your too much of a b***h to wait then go get a new phone and stop b****ing about what SE does. If you can’t hang with the delay then just go buy a new phone. I don’t want to back up SE but i don’t want to hate on SE either, so stop posting bad comments and hope for the best

  25. i just want my fone to run smoother..am sick of it freezing and not recognizing when i touch the screen, me then touching it again only for the first touch to have been recognized and then the second touch sends to somewhere else. i am sick of the battery being erratic. i change my brightness to automatic and then i get massively improved duration only for 2 days later for it to drink juice for no reason. ( i have very few apps on my fone). i am sick of the seemingly random nature of email alerts…sometimes it beeps, othertimes it doesnt. A camera that only works in broad daylight. 8 mega pixels and no flash?? the light is crap and just blinds people and doesnt brighten the picture. the bluetooth that doesnt work. i have a mac so cant connect by usb so the bluetooth would be helpful but doesnt recognise my laptop…
if none of this is resolved then they can shove their animated wallpapers up their collective arses. i am stuck with this phone for another 18 months and its garbage. i didnt get an iPhone as the carrier here in Japan is softbank which i hate so i chose the xperia on what is the most widely covered network…boy did i make a mistake.

  26. How exactly did SE rip you off??

Did they not provide you with a mobile phone after handing money over? Yes
Did SE promise an update to the OS? Yes
Are SE providing the promised update? Yes

Then they didn’t rip you off. Now piss off and go cry to mommy because she’s the only one who cares.

P.S I don’t believe I’m arguing with 18 year old morons again. Please don’t waste my time with your frivolous bullshit anymore.

  27. ITT: People act like complaining about SE’s ridiculously slow updating is somehow beyond reason.

Sure, people get kind of crazy with their language, but we’re sitting on a phone that we expected to be updated fairly quickly. 1.6 is now over a year old. 2.1 was released three months before the x10 was in the UK/Japan. 2.2 was released a month after the x10’s release. Other phones released around the same time have long since been upgraded to 2.1, if not 2.2.

SE’s mishandling of this already out of date update is easily reason enough for a lot of people to be very angry about their purchase and/or still remaining contract time.

  28. @Makka/@Benji91
Shows how little you guys know about android. 2.2 vs 2.1 all about speed. I prefer to drive a Ferrari then a Toyota.
Other than the Flash, where’s the Wifi tethering, and faster browser?

  29. @makka
have to disagree with you. i’m not one of those people who has to have latest thing just for sake to be in or smth. i upgraded from my k800i after like what….3, 4 years? and why moaning that it not runs the latest ver. of OS, because you would think that if you buying something what’s was released, would automaticly have the latest (which you can call standard) OS, just so your device was build for what it was….to be SMART phone, which means phone, but also little PC like. so not only phone purpose, but also for www purpose. smart phone. and if that device wont support flash player pluging 10.1 your whole browsing experience is gone, coz you wont be able fully enjoy web browsing without flash player support, so you’re fucked again like with my k800i which used to give me message type of can’t load the page. too big to open. ok. fair enough, wasnt buying it as a smart phone, but as a phone, which I must say it’s a great phone. sorry for my english, i understand what i’m trying to say. it’s mainly my mistake, coz i’m not really materialistic, so wasn’t really payng any attention to whole mobile phone problematic and dindn’t know much. just trustfully assuming if that’s a new product it will have newest whatever, OS fe. if i knew what is androind and theres 2.2 ver out there already flash plugging is stepping into the mobile world and be supporting 2.2 only and this one has 1.6 and i wont be able experience full web browsing i would never buy it, eventhough it has deadliest design what;s out there at the moment (well to me it has). and we’re talking only about OS. dodn’t tell me you don’t know about other technicall/software issues this phone has….way to many. and they shouldn’t even…ahhhh, leave it.

  30. @Makka – my biggest problem is that there are several programs I really need (not games) which run only under 2.1, also the battery issue (terrible discharge time) on X10 mini pro is supposed to be taken care of by the update. Otherwise I don´t care what version of OS and even what OS my X10 mini pro is running.

I am upset by the fact that in order to use the functions I bought my X10 mini pro for (push mail, OTA sync) I have to always have a power outlet nearby, as the battery lasts for 6-7 hours. Sure I can turn background data transfer off, but hey, why should I turn off features, which led me to buying this phone?

  31. All in all it is not the problem of having or not having 2.1, it is all about the way SE is handling the whole situation. In the beginning it was Q4, then it became Q3, then it was end of September, then it was end of October, now they say middle of November. They should have sicked to their original Q4 announcement, and nobody would have complained. But this erratic and spontaneous change of deadlines is demonstrating to the outside world that SE is having deep inside problems like with project management, marketing and public relations, as well as inter-departamental coordination. This, and not the delays makes me doubt the SE future.

  32. I just phone Sonyerrorson 1 min ago and they confirmed that the update will not availabe until the December. …WTF…i am going to sell it and buy i9000….

  33. It’s really a great relieve to still find that there are wise people, who are still patient and looking forward for this update with out complining and whining about it like a 10 year old kid.

I’m glad the majority now is happy and satisfied, and seriously no offense but I don’t give a damn about people who are not satisfied with the phone because of the os, you knew from the main beginning that it was only 1.6, so grow up and take full responsibility for your actions.

    Thanks,

  34. @fact is fact Not really. I for example come from years of Windows Mobile experience and didn´t know about different versions of Android, and the fact that most of the programs are written for 2.1. Confronted with a list of the mobile phones I could chose from, I selected my X10 mini pro just because of its size, and the fact that I can carry it in jeans pocket without breaking it.

Only later I found out the battery problem and the 1.6 incompatibilities, as it was my first Android experience. If I would have had Android experience (and not WM) before, I would have never chosen any device running under 1.6

  35. 2.1 update delay until the end of Nov again…this is confirmed when i call sonyerrison customer sevices….

  36. @vlad

    exactly.

same all, same all…learnig process. now i know more about android stuff. you have to be really carefull these days and really study, find out and check everything whatever you’re buying, because it’s seems these days manufacturers like to make money and it’s one big game on customer. especially all electronic gadgets are evolving so quickly. even laptops are not what they’re used to be. like they would be built for year or two because either hardware fault, or software problem + incopability, just so you can/must buy again.

  37. @eric

    lovely.
achhh, sure, it’ll fly. in the meantime i’ll be using it as a phone only, but i tell you that touch screen is messy thingy, talking about calling…lightly grab it wrongly and here you go, you’re doing something else…

  38. Wow…so many people worked up. Personally, I’m concerned about this flu season. I found a really cool case for my phone at a street fair and the vendor was drooling over my x10…yup, the 1.6 os and all. Please pardon me if I’m not vain enough. Lol!

  39. For those with battery issues, get Helix donut launcher, it will easily double your battery life, mine with average usage lasts one and a half days.

P.S its only available through google and dev install

  40. I ran linpack and I got 4.23 MFLOPS.

SE are the biggest liars on the face of this earth, they put Dick Cheney to shame.

  41. whatever it is I have decided to gift my x10 to my girl friend she loves it cause of its looks and I am gonna get myself a Htc desire hd which will be way better than x10

  42. So many bogus posts. Most issues are problems with cellphones in general. People would bought a a 500 dollar phone with little research. Or say flash which can be easily done through skyfire.. its a smartphone use some apps.
true sony needs to get 2.1 and have had more then enough grace time. But being stupid helps nobody.

  43. So guess we can stop asking for 2.2 or flash or anything else in that matter. Hopefully the messiahs at XDA can be our saviors…

  44. @ X10 Owner

that’s some troll using his name, It’s pretty simple to tell that its someone else
    1) there’s no icon on that post
    2) they still have to update 2.1 even further
    3) SE or any other serious company wont comment on leaked info like the X11, X12 or PSP phone

  45. If this is true, it’s a real stab in the back for the tens of thousands who have put their faith in the x10, and Android.

A lack of support after January means that the phone will start to wither and die – and that will reflect badly on future SE phones. Bad tactics.

  46. the same story again….??????????
    still delay?

Fuck off u bull shit SE..

I could C guys who are still okey with update delays here… Gud luck U guys..
U all will be praised with Nobel for patience soon…

  47. Rikard Skogberg says:
    October 28, 2010 at 9:50 am

BUY HTC DESIRE HD OR SAMSUNG GALAXY S if you don’t like the X10!

  48. I want this update so much and i was very optimistic about it but if there is no update today im afraid there wont be update this week 99%. :/

  49. X10 owner – his name isn’t even spelt properly so of course its not him. Use your head!

  50. @Richy NUFC & X10 owner: SE would never publish such news in a small post among thousands of other posts because it would get lost in the crowd.

More and more people are getting a kick out of pissing X10 owners of. Just ignore it.

  51. “flash” it is skyfire
The Skyfire 2.0 is available for Android 1.5, 1.6, 2.0 and 2.1 devices. For those users who interested to install the Skyfire 2.0 on their Android devices can follow one of the below options:

    Good

  52. But there should be normal generic soft for unlocked (non simlock) phone. Which I got and was orginall configured like that in carphonwarehouse no debranding! . But I don’t have it. I wounder Rikard Skogberg what he means by that I understand if the phone is locked and 02 branded but a generic soft should be avaible now. Most android comes which all language pre-installed or they put it. What he is talking about??

  53. What i did I repaired my x10 which mean i cleared to the factory condition.
I thought that if it clean and generic it should be faster but I was wrong?
    Was I??

@xxxxxxxx Depends. The devices with generic firmware will get the update sooner.

    Still it hasn’t released!
    waiting … waiting….. waiting….

  55. So if there is no even generic version of the software so How some people get it in the previouse topic update or it is just bullshit. or may they are Se workers. I thought that english is multinational and should be first on the market
    Shoudn’t be ?
    I confused!!

  56. for example
    “stacey October 27, 2010 at 10:25 PM
Just got my update!!!! YEYYYYY! Its GGGGGGreat x”
    how that work
Are you a SE worker or did you pay for it????

  57. “stacey October 27, 2010 at 10:25 PM

If you did pay tell as where I gonna pay for it!

can you give as a link for this info “Depends. The devices with generic firmware will get the update sooner.”

  59. @ Alan
I know that with each upgrade there are huge boosts to speed, is it around 30-50% faster? But here, im being realistic…i dont think we’ll get 2.2 until a new, better Sony Ericsson phone is launched or get 2.2 at all. I take an interest in all the technical stuff in well alot of things and for most of us, we dont need all that other stuff thats going on in 2.2 such as , as you said, “wifi tethering”. Dont be bitchy, understand that we use our phones differently to other people and we all have different standards of what is acceptable for such an update…comparing phone OS to cars, really???!!!!

  60. @marco geneeruc means the phone compamy hasnt added thier own branded software with sonys. if yours is 02 branded like mine dont hold ur breathe on getting it anytome soon as tmobile said their customers will recieve 2.1 end of novrmber

  61. Despite the fact that SE has increased PR regarding 2.1 for the X10 – now even on the X10 product page there is still no update. I’m on the X10 Mini Pro and no update in Denmark. I’m getting really sick and tired of watching SE doing false PR. Release the damn thing!

  62. relax people…. chill out… everything has a reason… why a delay is occuring…. it’s better to wait than having a result that will be a disappointment.. what matters is we will be having a phone which is as good as brand new…. patience everybody….. i myself can’t wait… lol

  63. @Nonnopinolo: It’s old news. The source is the original post by SE “Updates on updates” dated September 23rd 2010. So nothing has changed. Please look into facts before you post and show a little more critisism on online info. 😉

  64. BTW – the update will be released this week. PR points that way. So keep on checking SEUS and PC Companion. You’ll get it before the end of tomorrow. 🙂

  65. IF THIS IS REAL
THEY ARE JERKS WITHOUT ANY DOUBT
    THIS IRRITATNG

SEE YOU IN THE CRISTMAS TIME !

Jerking take about 5-8 minute comparing to 24 hours over 10 mouths
    that joke !!!!!!

  67. OK, I’ve got a newbie question…
Will we be able to keep the apps already installed? Or do we have to reinstall them once we update?

  68. i dont belive my eye! this must be dream !
    did i already wake ?
No .When i wake the update will wait for me in notification bar !
    got damn hell !
Are you really that kind of people in se?
    No that must be deam

    See you in crismas time
Bet that there will be no update at all! I dont belive how can i be so stupid to belive that i get something for free. When you buy new x10 hd i will have it other way just fuck you marco
What I can do is just watch those video and jerk as they do!
and of story! I going to sell this stupid mashine and try to forget about that i buy x10 and wait for update |That was bad dream That was bad dream That was bad dream That was bad dream That was bad dream That was bad dream That was bad dream That was bad dream That was bad dream That was bad dream That was bad dream That was bad dream That was bad dream That was bad dream And also i got to the pshychiatry to get idea how to forget about.

  70. @marco
    Cool buddy..U well said.

All are really disappointed coz of SE’s fucking shit delay in release…

I lost interest in getting update.

“Is there any use of getting our child hood wish – a cute bicycle when u are @16? “

  71. Bla bla bla…. I’m S-T-I-L-L waiting for the update.
Have just tried the newest version of
    Sorry Errorson Service Update
on my white X10i. No update so far.

  72. now the motorola droid 2 is really getting their “IMMINENT” update/upgrade to Android OS 2.3 and we’re still waiting for the effing out-dated 2.1…it’s the biggest joke of my life buying this phone from SE…

  73. No update so far! Have just tried with the Service Update application on my computer and X10i.

  74. I sold my X10 and got a Samsung Galaxy, best move ever.
SE just waste of time and money, I lost out on money but seems galaxy is far better.
cant believe the picture of the screen and how fast the system actually is.
    Follow my foot steps people.
    Dave in Dublin

  75. Relax gentlemen, this over excited anticipation for a minor update does you guys very little credit. The update will be available probably mid-november. With this update there is nothing you could not do before that you will be able to do after updating apart from running a few applications. It is not froyo.
SE already prepared the way for another delay with their lame excuses for lengthy development. Truth is, as I have always said, they will delay as long as they possibly can.
The trouble most of you have is the very superficial mindless fanboys who keep eating SE shit happily. If we could all speak with one voice expressing our disappointment with SE over the x10, maybe they might have been pressured into behaving differently.
Imagine what anyone from SE who visits this site would have seen from the comments a lot of you have been making in recent days. They will go back to their superiors with the message “yes some are upset, but many are happily content with us”.
Most of you have been posting rightly for some time now how angry you were with SE but as soon as they start showing clips of the phone with the update, you all change back to singing their praises.
If we x10 users can’t even behave consistently then we don’t deserve to be taken seriously.
They tech blogs are doing their bit by downgrading the phone but I’m afraid users have not shown anything other than a very fickle nature( one minute angry…the next happy).
It’s also possible that a lot of the angry birds have already sold their x10s(judging from the number of x10s on ebay) and so this site is filled with mindless drones.

  76. Dave Lawless:

It looks shit though. The Samsung Galaxy. Also, I hear that they have problems with the os, and that the phone is unstabile. This also go for my friends with Desire. Yes, I think we should get 2.1. NOW, but SE is still a great phone. Main objection for me, is that it (and none of the mentioned) supports bought US and European standard for G3.

  77. Jesper Simonsen:
    You’ve probably got 3, right?
In case you don’t know – If you did’nt debrand your phone, you will get the update mid september.

  78. My telephone works at 95% now, the update will add that other 5% (the only real thing is a little better performance and 720p video).

I don’t really care about a month longer or faster, as long as it is bugfree, I hate it when I have to update my telephone 2 times in one week.

  79. Definately no update ?? Why i stil can not belived??
I am very dissapointed about reliabilty the se

  80. @Usman: Check the source – it all ends up with the post on the SE blog from september: “Updates on updates”. It’s NOT a new delay – it’s the one from september 2010. So relax. Your update will be online today or tomorrow. 🙂

  81. Guys… I loved SE for their phone quality and as a brand. After the X10 i can assure you that i will never buy a SE phone nor let anyone i know make the same mistake.

This can happen to all companies, but the true mark of a Company is the way they handle themselves in a time of Crisis. If they expect All of us to go Ga ga over any new phone they release they are mistaken…

SE…. With the kind of competition in the market, you guys are digging your own grave… Its time to do damage control..

You should release whatever you have ready.. Anyway your quality assurance guys dont know what they are doing.(if not we would not have such a crappy device).. We will test it and let you know what bugs exist and then you can take another year to fix them…

my x10 is Resting in Pieces… I now have a GalaxyS… it like moving from a Toyota to a Porche..

  82. Ok this all looks good, but they are still ignoring the in call volume issue, which is the main function of a phone!

  83. @Tag

    Stop eating shit.

  84. @zodiac
I am always on your side. I hate SE unable to deliver as much as you. From beginning til now i have no faith on SE at all.
I believe what you said on SE superior didn’t know the shit happening. Have we ever see SE CEO step out to fuck his staff or apologize to X10 user?
There is no solid evidence at all on 2.1 release or even readiness. normally if there is any Beta or RC version (like HTC) it will “delibrately leaked” by someone. I in doubt those video showing android 2.1 is in fact some version changer like lately introduce to iphone, in order to fool us.
And if there are leaks, lotz of die-hard will get a copy and try the shit out., including myself.
What we see is custom firmware that required you to root/brick you X10.
By mid-november its readiness still a big ‘?”. look at the fucking SE UK twitter, they said on 25th the release will not out, it will be due in next few days. No exact date commit/confirm by them. Is that very hard to count from 26th to 31st? Can’t even a day being confirm? Now what happen to them, shut their mouth off and the asshole as well so that we can’t screw their ass.
To all for you, i urge you to stand same line with us, and to show our anger against SE.

  88. The update is NOT delayed!!

Holy shit, how mentally challenged must one be to believe trolls such as “Rikard Skogerg” (whereas the real name of the developer is Rikard Skogberg). Besides, if there was to be another delay, why would Rikard post that in the comments of another, older post??

Official update or it didn’t happen

  89. burdie,
I am afraid the mindless fanboys will never let it happen. For those who say user angst does not achieve anything. Let me remind you that it was user outrage that pushed SE to move in the first place from q4 to q3. But just as we were gaining momentum, the fanboys stepped in with their ass kissing, brand worshipping crap like a bunch of fucking teenage girls which presented SE with the opportunity to go back to their original plan because they thought “oh well some of our users are happy”.
For me personally, my disappointment is from accepting that we will never see Froyo on the x10 so I am not too bothered with the update cos I know it will not offer what I really want.
My plan was to see out half my contract before getting another phone but who knows I might use Christmas as an excuse to get something else and see what I can get back for the x10 then.
In my opinion, the open and rapidly evolving nature of Android presented a marketing dilemma to SE and it seems their solution to that conundrum is to release their phones with older versions of the platform to maximize sales of future phones.
A lot of fanboys keep spewing out what I can only describe as desperately poor attempts at reason for example I hear many say “this is SEs first Android device so give them a break”. That argument just has so many holes in it that I will not counter it in too much detail. The x10 is not SEs first smart phone. The process of porting android onto their devices cannot be that radically different from say porting symbian onto satio or windows mobile onto X1/X2. After all newer and much smaller outfits like LG, Hauwei, HTC seem to manage. These companies don’t even have half the resources that SE have. It would not even surprise me at all if they released their next phone with 2.1. After all they released x8 in q4 of 2010 with 1.6.
    I

  90. udeah holyshit guess your american, dont say the update is not delayed when you do not know besides you ameticans will be getting it last

    thanks

  91. DUDE!

a whole 7 MFLOPS? my nexus one got like 50+ MFLOP.

this phone was a fail. can’t believe i spent top dollar on this piece of junk.

  92. Anyone know if AT&T will trade this phone for GalaxyS and if so how? I’m tired of owning a brick that never works and will never be updated.

  93. Patch,
the x10 is not a brick…it’s a decent phone(the best SE have made to date)…. it’s just not a great android phone. Although I can totally understand your frustration. If your like me(more interested in android than SE) then it’s a rather regrettable acquisition.

  94. @tibroh
that wad an old blog, the website even corrected thier mistake
take it easy, not the end of the world. SE is the one who is really hurt if it got delayed even further.

  95. This is like kids waiting for their exam results. To be announced at 12 AM but delayed…to be announced at 3 AM but delayed again…Lol!!

  96. If the update will be tomorrow or on monday I have to say sorry!!

Im so sorry i apologise thou if there will be a update on proper time!!

I fill sorry for marco. his is a bit short temper
but i not suprise! I was furious as well
Come Se I want to say sorry to you

The latest information regarding the roll-out can be found in our English blog at Product Launch Blog. Here you can also look through pictures and videos, as the software for our phones will look like after the update and what it does then.

Jasmine Tree: Yes, it is envisaged that the update on Thursday (28.10.) Or Friday will be available (29.10.).

Current info about the roll-out is available on your english blog and Product Launch blog. Here you can find pictures and videos on how the mobile will look after the update.

Andreas: Is there a release date?

Jasmin Baum: We expect the update to be available on Thursday the 28th or Friday the 29th.

  105. I’ll give PC Companion a try later tonight. I live in Denmark which means timezone CET+1. I’ll post the results. 🙂 If it’s not tonight then I am positive that the update will be available for unbranded versions of the X10 family tomorrow. The roll-out to the servers will most likely take please in the night between today and tomorrow where most people are sleeping. That means that the roll-out will start in Asia by the “date line” and then continue west towards Europe and North/South America hour by hour. So everyone will have the update when they wake up tomorrow morning.

But hey – that’s just my theory. 😉

  106. SE has the most fitting slogan possible: “make-believe”. This is their new business strategy for sure. They market their Android-flagship heavily to make us believe we will receive loads of updates. They then make us believe this is actually happening by releasing firmware “updates” (R1FA014, R1FA016, R1FB001 R2BA020 and R2BA26 to name some) with little if any improvements all included. They then make us believe a bunch of Q# specific release dates for the long awaited 2. release, just to make us shut up for the time being. They then make us believe that things are finally about to happen by releasing preview videos. And yet again they disappoint us all by delaying it all once again. They are not willing to discuss EoL (End- of-Life) either, of course because if this 2.1 update ever comes, it will surely be the last one for the X10 family. This is the worst customer experience I have ever received. Just release the developer firmware and let someone how knows what they are doing dea with this. SE is obviously completely lost in the matter

  107. forgive me if I’m still sceptical, even with the info Mrs. Baum gave us. She didn’t mention a month or year, that is…
As I said before, I believe that the update is out the day my phone shows a notification.
Furthermore, I’m with @zodiac and @vlad. I’d _love_ to have “chrome to phone”, espacially because there’s an “opera to phone”-mod, but I’m afraid that I’ll have to buy a new phone for that, as this program only runs from 2.2. on, which I believe won’t hit the X10 during its lifespan.

  108. This is the funniest blog ever, so many idiots 🙂 I think i’ll keep my x10 at 1.6 for a good while yet. Does everything i want and looks and feels better than a lot of it’s rivals.

  109. LoL, your all getting excited about a fat tart from SE customer service? Lets be honest, all customer services, for every company, talk complete SHIT.

  110. Interesting that the so called announcement comes from a customer service rep and not from SE its self. Just saying. You would think after all of the shit they have taken they would want to make a formal announcement themselves……….

  111. Well i lost hope a long time ago 🙂 IF this update was due to come out by the end of october (which it wont), sony would of announced it by now. I would be happy if sony just admitted, on there blog, that the update is delayed again, instead of hiding behind there screens not saying a word.

  112. @jon
with any doubt you right. They have been “nicely” treated only by my self and i not talking about others!

  113. yes it’s now 22:11 in The Netherlands

    and update 2.1 is Available
    the update is running now
I make a video as proof

    greetz Tim

  114. What the hell are you delusional morons doing counting the mintues, waiting for the update. Have you learnt nothing? There won’t be an update for weeks, if the update was due shortly, SE would be making all kinds of noise and spreading comments and rumors about it and give us a definitive timeframe for its release.
They have done nothing other than shitty videos, they are silent and they will delay for as long as they possibly can.

So get off your ass, switch off that SEUS and come back in a month or two. I’d be suprised if we get anything by then.

NITWITS. THERE WILL BE NO UPDATE THIS OCTOBER. HOPE FOR ONE IN NOVEMBER, COUNT ON DECEMBER, HAVE IT IN JANUARY.

  115. Tim,

Helemaal niet waar. Waarschijnlijk is het de update voor PC companion en niet 2.1!

    @ everyone else,
Nevermind Tim, I’m in the Netherlands too and there’s no update here.

  116. There is a simple reason for SE’s silence. They won’t make the same mistake again. That’s why SE is silent. You won’t hear anything from SE before the update is on the servers and people have started downloading it. So if you are expecting a parade then you are sadly mistaken.

  117. What about cosmote in Greece? when the update will be available?
The main problem with 1.6 is the consumption of the battery. The battery runs out very quickly. This is a biiig problem with 1.6 and must be faced now….

  118. Tim, you chat so much shit it’s untrue!!

Just been to the telefoons SE website: No Nieuwe updates available mofo!

  119. @ GP and other nincompoops

Use Taskiller or SystemPanel to kill apps not in use, this greatly increases battery life
Turn off WIFI or 3G when not in use
    Turn down brightness.

My crappy X10 lasts about 3 days with normal use.

  120. God damn it guys!

Rikard has just confirmed that there is no update yet!
    Quote:
“As far as I know there shouldn’t be any Android 2.1 sw up on any servers yet, for any markets.”
“As far as I know everything looks right on track so far so the plan still holds to start the roll-out before October ends. It’s very important to remember though that that is the START of the roll-out.”
“I just want to be very clear on this so that e.g. if you hear from your local SE reps that it’s mid-november or even late november on your market they can of course be right.”

So it’s wiser to follow news about the update on your local SE twitter feeds.

  121. This is bullshit steve jobs.
Taskiller eats up more energy than leaving applications shut down normally.
Android kills applications when it decides they have to switch off. This is not windows myfriend….

  122. All,

You need to remain calm. We know that everyone has been waiting a long time and the wait is almost over. the update will be on line before months end, however the complete roll out country by country provider by provider and for those unbranded could take until the end of November for the complete roll out. You will see an announcement on the SE site some time Friday or Saturday.

    Too bad ,. so sad,..
Im pleased with the new update,. for what i see on the net,. but i would love it on my device… not only on the net.. Understand? But i would love to know,. if someone from the SE company is reading all these comments… if so,. please mail me,.. im sure youse have the E-mail and if not,. you can comment to me in here… thanx

  124. im only interesting in UK Generic the basic one
Uk is still status is not changed yet

I feel like night of new year time every body are waiting 🙂 for firewoks.
    Are you? :0

  125. I feel obligated to point out to everyone making witty slurs and comments with the sony tag line “make.believe”, that while sony and sony ericsson share a strong partnership and are under the same banner, they are still two individual properties, that include, yes, different tag lines.

On which I should note any company decisions you find disagreeable you should direct specifically towards sony ericsson.

In addition, while I am both excited for the update and disappointed with its delay, I’m still going to buy SE in the future. Their hardware is impeccable, the design of the phones has no equal and with this next update, whether it be the last or not, will be sufficient enough to run the phone with all of it’s potential.

Most of you probably only argue for a higher firmware because it is a later version, unaware that the usable benefits and features included are minimal.

  126. i transfer my self to bed.
Colourfull dreams about update (good meaning-positive )
    See you tomorrow!

  127. Ivan listen its not just the update its having your expectations set you know wat its like wen you wait for that new car or console to be delivered only to come home from work and yup no delivery that dissapointed feeling you get well this is wat it is

  129. 2 days to go ………………………. i’m finding my 3g/2g is really slowing my phone down lately, resetting constantly …… need this update …..

    A 2.0.A.0.453 Oct 22, 2010

Interesting regarding the 3rd character on the version numbers. I wonder if this is referring to alpha/beta status or device A, device B. Then this begs the question; could this be for A (Xperia X10) and B (Xperia X10 Mini/Mini Pro) or A (Older X10 devices) and B (New X10 Devices with Multi-Touch screen)?

  131. Is that all you guys can do – complain about a silly update? Get on with life and do something constructive with your time instead of stressing about things which cannot be changed.

“Ivan listen its not just the update its having your expectations set you know wat its like wen you wait for that new car or console to be delivered only to come home from work and yup no delivery that dissapointed feeling you get well this is wat it is”

How does that compare in anyway to the update you moron? You should have said “It’s like waiting for your car to be fixed while having to drive the same car for a rental only it’s just the “base” model.

  133. On a further note, not that any of you care,

I’ve unbranded & rooted my X10i, which is much better being able to get rid of apps I don’t want using the Android SDK shell. I suspect now that my firmware reads as being generic, that I should get the update as soon as it’s initially available.

It’s currently 10:12 AM on Friday the 29/10 in Australia and I’m starting to get edgy that I won’t get the updated before November.

Please Sony Ericsson, it’s been a painful last month, please put me out of my misery and either let me know it’s delayed or just upload the firmware to the Akamai Technology cloud so we download it already, otherwise the hinge on my chair is gonna break from the constant rocking back and forth and I will have no finger nails left to chew shortly.

  134. @JO It’s our time and we do wat we want! U think ur silly comment is constructive? Then u r a total dumbfuck. Get a life!

  135. @Bandit – u little fuck! Go and suck some cock asshole! u like that video doncha u bitch?!

  138. @ Bandit

    I’m rating your comment -8.

Yes, I’m a dumb to click your link and try the Update Services. Thx for the anti-climax douche. I thought the video was funny though. +1 for humour, -9 for douche-ism.

  139. is there any idea when India x10i will get update…will it get together with all country or at different time…any Indian guys or frnds reply

  140. Hey folks this is the latest twitter I got from sony ericsson uk :

SonyEricssonUK Hi everyone. We know how frustrating it is and
we hear you. We are finalising details of the update right now and will have news very soon.

  141. Stop holding your breath guys….the plan for SE is to roll out the update from the end of october onwards.

  142. SE needs to do a better job of communicating issues and timelines upfront if they are any bit serious about their mobile line of business. Creating a colorful Facebook page and giving out a phone every Wednesday is no great social media strategy. You need to hear us, and answer the issues that concern us. As far as I am concerned, Sony Ericsson is standing on a PR disaster

  143. I think I know what will happen – SE will issue an update for Vatican market – only 1000 citizen, none fo them using SE phones in October, and say fo the rest of the world it´s November. Ant the smartass Rikard will say – we warned you, it will be on country to country basis….

  144. Good morning
Good ? let see in the screen
no not jet I call it good
UK generic soft has not arrive to my x10 yet

  145. SE has already stated that they will use the wqeekend if need be. October has 31 days remember?

Lets just cross our finger for the ROLLOUT to start today so some lucky people will get it atleast.

  146. There is a roll out untill Monday? so it will start on the 1 november?
Or this is the time for uploading update in the server :)?
Or may it is the time for us to make update -is it a race 😉
    Like that racing!!!
Fast and the Furious? No! The Slow and the Furious 😉

    (positive attitude)

  147. I just called up sonyericsson service centre and he told me that he is informed that 2.1 update will be by november end but he further told that expect it in mid december

    dont know whats going on
    I stay in Bombay(Mumbai)

  148. I guess SE have the last lap to do! Is it gonna be a pol position

New series of Fast and furious start in cinema 31 october !
Avaible only on PC Compansion Cinema!

  149. The rollout is starting in October. some will get it sooner then others, like perhaps Uk will get it sooner then Bombay, or vice versa.. who know.

    Quote from Patrik Skogberg
“Again some words about the update and the timing.
The SW is ready from a development perspective and has been in extensive testing also with our partners from the beginning of this week. As far as I know everything looks right on track so far so the plan still holds to start the roll-out before October ends. It’s very important to remember though that that is the START of the roll-out. There are literary hundreds of different versions to roll-out and each and every one of them needs one or more separate internal and/or external approvals. I just want to be very clear on this so that e.g. if you hear from your local SE reps that it’s mid-november or even late november on your market they can of course be right. They could know more than me about their specific kits on that market.”

    I left hope abt SE,
Even the worst case in Bangalore abt the update roll out date… They says Dec Last..

SE, I am pissed off.. I used to spend atleast 5 Hrs a day to find whether ur bull shit is released or not.

U guys really make us (Your customer) fools.. Great Sony Ericsson

    Sony Make.Fucks Customer

Keep it up ur Good work. U will live long

  151. This so so so so boring please please how can se be so so sharp for us can.we get that update this so so unplesent

  152. You lot are so funny! Had to check these comments again as they’re so funny!

Neither know nor care when seus will give me the option of updating. Will update once you lot quit whining about it 🙂

  153. se shits..
really.. they says now the roll out day which was specified was just for the few in unknown country..
There are hundred more updates that to be rolled out for different regions and most of them doesnt hv final approvals… Requires time

Just think then when it is gonna to be reach everyone?????????

SE , do you need ur customers to wait for this shit outdated update for their entire Life time?

I really love to hear this from you – “Sorry Nothing more from SE. We put an end to our journey”

  154. @ richard is it so funny? May be it look like that basically most of are furious! This example of * good* customer service look like but lets hope that finish soon

  156. One thing bothers me. I can understand that the update will be out later on for branded phones since the different operators need to change the firmware to their specifications. But the unbranded version of the firmware upgrade should be released at the same time all over the world. As soons as the firmware is on the servers I really can’t see the problem. How can it take a month to distribute the unbranded firmware?! I mean – it’s 2010!

  157. @sss se: The only thing they’ve stated recently is that the roll out should *start* at the end of october. Roll outs take time. I’m still not holding my breath. Are you all magically expecting this release to somehow make your phone more useable? Are there issues you have with it that mean it’s no good for you? If so tough, sell it if you can or live with it, you bought it. There are plenty of phones out there which are quicker to update android as they use a pretty much non-customised rom (unlike SE which is obviously partially why it’s taken them so long). None of them look or feel as nice as the X10 in my opinion but that’s just me.

Personally I’m a bit optomistic that 2.1 might just increase my battery life but other than that there is absolutely nothing in the build that I want. Had it been 2.2 with flash support then I might have been a bit more excited (but as ever in the android world there is an app for that, albeit Skyfire isn’t perfect). 5 or more home screens? There’s an app for that. Low in call volume? (not fixed in 2.1) I use a bluetooth headset. Timescape and Mediascape are crap? Root your phone and remove em. Use mixzing for music as it’s damn near perfect. Wifi tethering? Root your phone and there’s an app for that.

So aside from having the latest update (which you haven’t, that would be 2.3 or beyond) what’s the rush?

  158. Just noticed on the official x10 website that the 2.1 update is available for download…can someone confirm this as I’m at work for the next 9 hours with limited net…

  159. Where all SE people have fled fearing customer backlash? There is no response for last couple of days. Why don’t they proudly announce that they are incompetent and unable to give us update for next couple of months or years? Why raise expectations and play with our sentiments?

  160. @Jaster

please give that web site url..

a just checked, and there is no fw. still. with generic fw !

  161. Hoorrayy

I managed to sell my OLD X10 (yes is an old crap) and got a Samsung Galaxy instead run the update today to 2.2 and works like a charm.
    Never for SE

  162. Actually just noticed this is in the build:

    • Wireless home connectivity via DLNA

Which I might actually have a use for. Otherwise, not interested.

  163. Thought that i wont participate in discussions over such trivial issue as an upgrade of the phone I have. I mean what people are doing with their lives since such a meaningful issue is affecting it that much. Anyhow, I thought that SE would do something to improve the business experience with X10 (animated wallpapers and games certainly not what I’d expect). Although email & browser applications are quite OK what is annoying is that you have to tap the screen at least 3 times to call a contact and what is most annoying is that there is no o(I mean really no) VoIP app, that is usable with X10. Every single app routed calls to speaker instead earpiece resulting with hideous voice quality and without any exception echoes on the other side of the call . Also , either the mic is to sensitive or there is a significant fault in speaker & mixing that further diminishes the quality of voice that other side of the call receives. All this rendering the phone voip useless!

  164. @zodiac
ther are quite few think what you can do
    1 )use a fuck mashine
    2) jerk if you a man or shemale (?)
    3) turn on virbaration in your x10 and (>>>)
    4) call for a bitch pay and have nice time
    5) just take cold shower!!!
    You can choose

  165. I forgot
When you finish tell as did you get orgasm (exculation)and how was it

  167. Se common be mercy to zodiac he/she need update to get orgasm

  168. @x10 warrior

  169. You will feel! Just wait !May be Se will be mercy to you and you will be pleasent before cristmas

  170. @Skopski Get an app to replace the dialer. The default one is pretty weak. I use MeContacts which is pretty good and the widget particularly nice.

I use mine as a business phone and pretty much always use a bluetooth headset with it. All sounds usually stream to it OK (occaisionally on a restart I find starting the music player will cause it to play on the phones speaker rather than on the headset but that’s the exception). Might fix your issue with VOIP to although I’ve not had a need to play with that.

  171. @ zodiac
Are you alright or did you get heartattack
If not you will when you hear new delay in some not far future!!!

  172. oooo oooo I’m also feeling horny and I feel I want a bottle of bear in my ass now like zodiac.

  176. @zodiac

ya baby suck it suck it hard, it feels good sucking it after the update I feel a lot of power now with faster speed.

you are a good bitch zodiac keep the good work

  177. Come on guys! I’m a believer in the freedom of speech, but this level of trashtalk shows the real age of some people in here. This is more or less an open channel so use a proper language for this forum.. thanks!

  178. hello SE developers.

I gonna to lose my mind waiting for the update. why you announce it but dont just DO IT ?! pushing the release date every mounth is no solution.

  179. All thou let’s come back to reality now and se what happen in slowest ever company Se

  180. i rang sony this moring and they said that we will all be getting the up date by the 31st if your phone is unbranded if your not unbranded then good luck to even see the up date befor xmas . love the fact i got my x10 mini from carphone and comes unbranded o yeah

  181. aaaah aaaah aaaah my ass is so big now, I can insert 3 x10’s with 2.1 in it.

It feels good, please only updated 2.1 in my ass, I don’t want any 1.6

  182. Jesus… The rumour mill is utter bollox!

I have literally just gotten off the phone with Sony Ericsson (UK – 08705 237237) and they have stated that the update is due to be rolled out “by the end of this month” and they have not been made aware of any changes to that plan. When I asked about the internet rumours, the bloke went off, spoke with a tech manager who confirmed that there are no “known delays”…

So how about we show a little patience, and if by November 1st, it’s not been rolled out, contact SE again and ask for an update.

And to everyone who says that SE is crap, simple solution… BUY A NEW PHONE, or even better, get a job with SE and design the rollout for Froyo!

  183. Is your 2.1 is still working or it will go on a warranty repair
Remember the any liquid in the phone will disqulify them to be warranty rapair so will have to by paid

  184. sse-se,
keep up the good work. We are all spellbound by your incredible wit and imagination. You should have ago at the script writing. I’m sure Hollywood could really do with someone as creative as you considering all the trash that passes for films today.

  185. just think youselfs lucky that the android os is so much better than the iphone they have to update all the time you have to jailbreak to get cracked apps for free its bullshit . so when the update for x10 cums i know i will be keeping my phone for a long time even my mate with a iphone 4 wonts to get the x10 he thinks the same as i do so stop bitching to se about this update and just sit down have a drink or a smoke and just wait it wont be long 😛

  186. I have nothing to say bad about Iphone 4 my girlfriend used she is happy !
“Customer satisfaction is most important” quote from uni book (What?) this is not apply se
out of brakets se does not fit

  187. I have smoke, drink, bear, vodka, coffee, tea, watch all kind films including (p..n) have o…..m and and few other (……) I i get bored by now se status has not been changes over that time so any think more interesting

  188. Se you real should read this blog and keep it as a remainder an few other topic below!
or as you wish as a lesson note!!!

  189. yea that very good, brilliant lesson note.

There should be a topic How to make good customers service especially for .. .

  190. @zodiac
You started (….) I just help you solve this complex problem.
    which you have long time!
    did you?

  191. I really don’t understand the extreme frustration of some people here.
Even with Android 1.6 only, I really enjoy my X10. I’ve tested both HTC desire and Samsung Galaxy S, and I wouldn’t swap my X10, even if the Samsung is a good phone too. It’s not just about OS release number guys, there are so many other aspects to consider, and the X10 is still one of the best choices!

P.S. My guess is that some teenagers here really really “need” the flash support to watch p*rn movies… my advise to them: buy a laptop, you’ll get larger pictures 🙂

  192. I thought it was comi out last week and thought “oh great, now I can film my Gran’s marrow competition in HD”
It’s too late now so I’m tinkig “Ohhhh SE you cheeky Monkey”

  193. I think it’s time you made people register their name before leaving comments. With so many children posting on here was only a matter of time before people resorted to juvenile attempts at forgery. You can tell when it’s really one of my posts though. I don’t sound like an adolescent virgin who’s had their toy taken off them for being naughty 🙂

  194. My x10 worked perfectly at home in a constant 3G connection… I’ve moved to uni and I’m back on GPRS and the phone has become awful… it lags when making calls, when sending texts everything…

To test my theory I went home on the weekend and back home it worked as it always had! Such a pisstake.

  195. @RichardC

Thanks for the info on the dialer app.

Have being playing with headphones & BT with SipDroid but SIP voice outgoing from X10 was still hopelessly useless!

  196. At the Sonyericsson.se site they today got the pictures up on The X10 with HD . So i don´t think that they will make us wait so much longer. I also got some papers to our store about the update to the X10 and that NEVER happends if it´s not for real….

But i will also recommend the app Open home. Installed it on my X10 and i can choose to have up to 7 homescreens and alot of small cool stuff comes with it.

  208. I they see how you move 1 finger up and down they will have fun as well
    I am not suprise!!
    I release that now !

  209. Is it my internet connection is wrong or whole sony ericsson website are overcrowded????

  210. If you can’t work out what an internal server error means on a website then you shouldn’t be allowed to own a phone 🙂

Obviously the update is so popular that enough traffic has been generated to crash their server. Either that or some script kiddie (are they still called that? I’ve rather lost touch with the modern parlance) has spammed it to death.

  211. Now its Friday and the update is STILL not released. SE u got Saturday and Sunday to release you shit else i’m over with SE shit

  212. thank god we have a little date. but this could change, remember we were ment to get it in september :(! just hope it was actually worth the wait! and i think SE is down, it’s not working for me neither.

  213. I dont understand why everyone so stressed out anyways. SE are giving us outdated software anyways AGAIN. HTCs are shipping out with 2.2 froyo with flash and we getting crapppy 2.1 with no flash. This must be the biggest con in history

  214. the other thing is, i seen somewhere that they are not doing it over the air update, this could rule out the majority or linux and mac users to the 2.1 update unless they have access to a pc with windows 🙁

  215. I’ve got Android 2.2. You lot are soooooo lame. I’ve got a HTC HD2 which is over a year old and you’ve not even got an up-to-date operating system.

I LAUGH IN YOUR FACE. Visit my website for more info.

  216. @blox and all others facing issues:
S.E appears to be having an overload..people too excited by this news that it is still not here? Haha, the website is not working for me anymore. SE CRASHED.

  217. Since I live in Denmark I will be one of the first to recieve the update! In your face fuckers! Muuuha muhaaaaa haaa haaaa!!! 😀

  218. @JC

I’ve already got 2.2, and have had it for 3 months. In YOUR face loser.

    Muuuha muhaaaaa haaa haaaa!!! 😀

  219. Today I can confirm that we will start the roll-out of the Android 2.1 based updates for Xperia X10, X10 mini and X10 mini pro now this coming Sunday. The roll out will start in the evening European time.

So far I have received confirmation that the generic kits for the Nordic countries will be the very first ones out on Sunday evening and then there will be more kits coming already during Monday and then the roll-out will continue throughout the month of November.

As said earlier these updates will give you some features introduced by Android 2.1 and the Xperia X10 will also get HD-video recording in 720p with continuous auto focus.
The changes in user experience after the update is a mix of things added or changed going from Android 1.6 to Android 2.1 and things changed or improved by us directly.

As a re-cap – The key changes for the different products are the following:

    Xperia X10:
    • HD video recording with continuous auto-focus for high quality videos
    • Upgrade of the Android platform to Android 2.1
    • New back up and restore application, with extended content back up
    • 5 homescreens for apps, widgets, shortcuts and folders
    • Social phonebook which automatically syncs contact pictures from Facebook and shows when your friends are online

Xperia X10 mini and X10 mini pro:
    • Improved Bluetooth functionality with support for sending and receiving pictures, contacts and more
    • New backup and restore application with extended content back up
    • Automatic synchronization of your contact pictures between Facebook and your phone book
    • Improved ways of handling pictures, audio, text and numbers in your messages
    • Upgrade of the Android platform to Android platform 2.1

In most markets, your phone will automatically let you know with a notification when the update is ready for your specific software version and then you will be guided to how to perform the update using the PC Companion software. In that process, because of this being a big update, you will also be guided through some steps to be able to backup personal data before the update and then restore it when the update is finished. Find out more at http://www.sonyericsson.com/update

IMPORTANT: As I’ve pointed out previously here on the blog the software upgrade will be done in a phased roll-out which means that different “kits” gets the update at different times. This to secure quality in all networks and countries. So don’t get paranoid if your phone isn’t updated in the very first days – it will come!

What we mean by a “kit” is a different configuration, i.e. color of the phone, bundled accessories but most importantly in this case different software configurations. The difference in software between different kits is mainly related to included settings, applications, network configuration etc – all this to comply to different legal and network requirements. All of these different kits need separate approvals based on market and network, hence the phased roll-out.
I will try to keep track of which versions that get released continuously and will post updates when new markets or “kits” become available. Feel free to share your findings in the comments section here when you get the update for your phone!

    Another Video on the Update
October 27th, 2010 As some of you have seen already I posted some videos earlier on what the experience is with the updated X10.
Of course I did my best in creating those earlier videos but there are people that are a lot more professional at such things than me.
Therefore I’m now glad that the videos created for our user support site are coming together and this first one out shows the major benefits of the update in the Xperia X10. I know that for those of you that have followed my earlier videos this will be a bit of repetition but it really is done in a much more professional way so I wouldn’t want you to miss it!
(Note – It does have some wording on getting the update now – that is not yet really valid and it wasn’t scheduled to be released until the update is out there. Still I wanted to make the video available to you here as somewhat of a pre-release)

    Blog Portal Survey
October 22nd, 2010 As most of you already know the main purpose of this blog is to get in touch with you out there. This of course to try to answer any questions you may have but also to gather your feedback on our products to be able to improve our products going forward. You really give great feedback and also in amounts big enough to make me have hard to keep up at all times.
As I said many times this is really appreciated and I assure you that your voices are important and fed back into our development and planning organizations.
The focus on this blog is around our products and what you think of them but now I would also like to take the opportunity to learn a bit on what you think about the blog itself.
As some may know we also have other blogs, The Sony Ericsson Developer Blog and the GreenHeart blog. Now there’s an initiative ongoing to create kind of a front window shared between the blogs. This work is ongoing and will most probably be used to improve the look and feel and design of the specific blogs as well, including this one.
Now when we’re evaluating different design ideas for such a “Blog Portal” I really think we should let you the readers have a say on which way the development should go.
Please if you have the time and interest feel free to take a short survey (around 10 min) with design proposals and interaction investigations to help us make the right choices.
If that sounds interesting – Click here to take the survey
Besides that I’m also curious to how you think the content of the blog should develop – I take care of most of the content here and really would like to hear what you want more or less of or if you have other ideas on how we should change going forward! Any ideas are welcome – just hit the comments section.
Even though this post isn’t really about our products you are of course still welcome to continue asking questions or engage in discussions around the products among the comments even on this post..
Finally – Have a great weekend all!

More Demos of the X10 Update
October 20th, 2010 Some of the things you expressed wishes to learn more about are any improvements to Timescape, Social Phonebook etc.
Yesterday I recorded another video showing you a bit of what to expect.
What I show is basically a small but important update to Timescape, the experience from our implementation of the Social Phonebook and also the improved in-call user interface.
As usual this video is recorded with another updated X10 so it will also give you an idea on what to expect on HD quality and continuous auto focus. Unfortunately for this one I was out of the office so I was in a bit too dark environement to get a perfect video, therefore you’ll see the exposure metering and the auto focus struggling a bit more than usual but I still think think it does a good job.
NOTE – because of the blurring of contact details to my friends this one has been edited – however I hope that shouldn’t have a big impact on quality.
As usual, any follow-up questions – just let me know in the comments section!

Home Screen and HD video in the X10 Update
October 14th, 2010 Now I’ve shot some videos of the pre-release software update that I have in my XPERIA X10. This is not the final release but we are really close to releasing the final candidates into external and operator testing and approval now. When that testing is ready and the candidates gets approved the roll-out will start. The current plan still holds to start the roll-out towards the end of October and onwards. (As mentioned earlier the roll-out is done gradually though so it will take some time before all different versions get the update.)
In these videos I try to show you both what the updated home screen looks like and also some results from HD video recording with continuous auto focus.
Remember that even though we are close to a final candidate this still is pre-release software so there might still be small changes and optimizations made before commercial release.
First video out is a short clip showing the home screen that now has 5 panes and some other nice additions such as 5 rows of icons instead of 4. I also show some new widgets that come with the update.

I also made these two videos to show the HD video result. The first one shows a more real life use case where I move the phone from filming a far away object to a much closer one.

In this second video I instead kept the X10 on the tripod and introduce a close object into the scene. This is more of a stress test and it does struggle a little bit in the first attempt but is much quicker in the second one.

There have been more requests from you on what you want me to show and I am working on it. If you have more requests just let me know in the comments section!

XPERIA X8 and Cedar Now Shipping
October 7th, 2010 Two new products have now started to hit the shelves of stores around the world.
First out is the XPERIA X8 which is the new addition to our family of Android based phones. The key selling point of the X8 is of course it’s very nice form factor sitting right in between the X10 mini and the big X10 in size. It gives a bit bigger screen than X10 mini but does have a step-down in e.g. Camera (3.2MP Fix focus) which makes it the most affordable Sony Ericsson Android phone ever. This is of course a nice thing when it comes to even further broadening the target group for Android smartphones.
Even though XPERIA X8 will be our most affordable Android smartphone so far there’s no compromise compared to the X10 range when it comes to connectivity (still 3G and Wifi) or application access (actually more applications available than the minis because of the higher resolution screen). It also has GPS, Google maps etc and also the 4 corner UI from the mini products. It’s kind of like the Android smartphone made easy!
Since much of the discussions here are about the forthcoming Android update I’d also like to make clear that also X8 is Android 1.6 from launch and will get the planned Android 2.1 update later this year. Final timing is not fully set yet but I expect it to be a bit later than for the X10 family.
When it comes to Cedar™ it’s our latest addition to the GreenHeart family of phones.
Also Cedar goes onto the lines of being the most affordable alternative and really is for consumers looking for an easy way to stay connected at an affordable price. It’s built on our own operating system as used in most of our feature phones such as W995, Elm, Hazel etc. It has all those things that are essential to most people such as a very comfortable keypad, calendar, messaging, email and more. On top of that it also features a desktop widget with support for Facebook, Twitter, MySpace etc connectivity and also Exchange Active Sync for corporate email, calendar and contact access etc. So even though it is a very affordable phone it really has most of the functionality of its bigger siblings Elm and Hazel.
On top of that it is a GreenHeart phone and in the case of Cedar the GreenHeart attributes applied are:
    • High efficiency charger with minimal standby loss.
    • Minimized box size and packaging material
    • Made out of recycled plastics
    • Painted with waterborne paint
    • E-manual to minimize the amount of paper in the box
    • “Eco-inspiring” applications such as EcoMate and GreenCalculator
    • PC software included automically on the phone instead of supplied on CD
More information on our GreenHeart initiative can be found on our GreenHeart Blog!
Finally here’s a short video that Albin and Amalia made on the XPERIA X8!

    More Apps Available
October 5th, 2010 As one of the major things about Android has been the huge amount of applications available I’m really glad to see the development lately on Android Market. For many of you out there this isn’t anything new but for me living in Sweden a great thing happened today. Paid applications are now finally available for purchase in my phone!
Last week Google made an announcement that the following markets would get access to paid apps in the coming weeks:
    •Argentina
    •Belgium

This morning I realized (thanks to http://www.swedroid.se) that it now is live for Sweden so if you’re in any of these new countries make sure to check out if your country has gone live as well!
Also since all these premium apps have been unavailable for me until now while some of you probably have had access for a long time – feel free to guide me to what you think are the must-haves out there!

    Sony Ericsson LiveView™
September 28th, 2010 This morning my friends over at our Extras department announced a new very cool accessory.
It’s called the Sony Ericsson LiveView™ and is kind of a new thing altogether so not that easy to describe, perhaps this video that Albin and Marcus put together does it best 🙂

What is does is that is sits on your wrist (with an included wrist band) or as a clip somewhere and gives you a quick view of what’s going on in your phone. Like a second wireless interactive mini display. This means that you can have your phone in you pocket or in a bag and still be alerted with notifications on incoming stuff or keept track of other things. It has an OLED screen with 128×128 pixels and some interaction elements such as 4-way navigation (touch sensors at the front, just at the edges of the screen) and two hard buttons, one for power on and off and for menu selection.
There are some given use-cases included already from launch, like notifications on incoming calls and messages, Facebook status updates etc. The cool thing however is of course that this device is available for use by any application that wants to. Think of this as kind of the usual Android desktop widgets but instead in a physical form, away from your phone. This makes this device quite an enabler for lots of cool ideas going forward. As you are aware there are thousands of great Android apps out there and I’m sure many of them could improve and evelove by use this device in cool ways. Then there might also even be some new applications ideas that are possible to realise now with this device that wasn’t even possible without it.
It will be sold as a stand alone device and start selling in around the same timeframe as our X10 products are updated (it needs Android 2.x to work). It will also be sold in different packages from us and from our partners. The currently finalised example is an “Experience Pack” with LiveView, a sporty style armband for having your phone on your arm and the SportyPal™ Pro application from CreationPal.
So – how does it work?!
It’s basically like an Android desktop widget but in physical form and its controlled over Bluetooth from an application in your phone called LiveView™ Application. This application will be available for download from Android Market and after it’s installed other 3rd party application can through different APIs plug into that and make use of the LiveView™ device. In the LiveView™ Application on your phone you can also scan Android Market for LiveView™ enabled applications to find more cool stuff to download. More information for developers such as documentation, APIs etc will be made available at our Developer World web site.
These are the specs and default included features: (find the full press release here)

    Update on Updates
September 23rd, 2010 I’ve seen all your questions around the planned Android 2.1 update of the current XPERIA range. I really hear your eagerness and thirst for more information – and of course the update itself.
We have earlier given some information on what to expect from this update and said that the roll-out was planned to start late Q3.
The plan for the added features and Android 2.1 step-up still holds but unfortunately we need a couple of more weeks before we are ready to start the roll-out.
The revised plan is to start the roll-out from end of October and onwards.
We are of course not happy about the change of launch timing but we have had to spend some additional time on the software to really makes sure we roll-out with the right quality and user experience.
When it comes to what to expect from the updated software all three X10 models will be updated to Android 2.1 and the Xperia X10 will also get HD video recording with continuous auto focus among many other things.
The key changes for the different products are the following:
    Xperia X10:
•HD video recording with continuous auto-focus for high quality videos
•Upgrade of the Android platform to Android 2.1
•New back up and restore application, with extended content back up
•5 homescreens for apps, widgets, shortcuts and folders
•Social phonebook which automatically syncs contact pictures from Facebook and shows when your friends are online
Xperia X10 mini and X10 mini pro:
•Improved Bluetooth functionality with support for sending and receiving pictures, contacts and more
•New backup and restore application with extended content back up
•Automatic synchronization of your contact pictures between Facebook and your phone book
•Improved ways of handling pictures, audio, text and numbers in your messages
•Upgrade of the Android platform to Android platform 2.1
Over the coming weeks we will here on the product blog keep you updated with visual and video examples on what your phone will look like and be able to do after the update!
I’d also like to highlight that the update will be made available in a phased roll-out which means that different “kits” get the update at different times. It will take some additional weeks from end of October before all different kits have the new software available.
What we mean by a “kit” is a different configuration, i.e. colour of the phone, bundled accessories but most importantly in this case different software configurations.
The difference in software between different kits is mainly related to included languages, settings, applications etc – all this to comply with different legal and operator requirements.
A software upgrade roll-out is similar to a normal product launch, i.e. we roll out the products in a phased manner as the kits are completed. This is due to global and local type approvals and network testing and the same apply for a software upgrade.
From the end of October you will be able to follow availability of the new software on a market by market basis here on the blog.
I will keep you posted with more information and details as we go along.

    Sustainable Phones
September 6th, 2010 The subjects on this blog are often technical but sometimes it can be quite refreshing that there’s more to mobile devices than just the techie stuff
Just recently O2 in the UK launched an initiative to build awareness and improve on sustainability called Think big (not all pages are accessible outside the UK, sorry). One part of this initiative is something they call Eco rating which is very well described in this document for those who want to learn more. In this Eco rating they have ranked 65 mobile phones from 6 different manufacturers and I’m really glad to see the Sony Ericsson Elm at the very top with a rating of 4.3 out of 5! It’s of course also very nice to see that 4 out of the top 10 models are Sony Ericsson phones with X10 mini, X10 mini pro and Zylo getting the second highest rating of 4.0.
As you might know we at Sony Ericsson have a long history around sustainability and substance control for our portfolio and have since quite a while decided to offer some products under the GreenHeart brand.

This brand is used for those of our products that carry the torch in including the latest “features” when it comes to minimizing the negative impact on our environment.
Some of the things included under the Greenheart proposition so far are:
    • High efficiency chargers with minimal standby loss.
    • Minimized box sizes and packaging material
    • Recycled plastics
    • Waterborne paint
    • E-manual to minimize the amount of paper in the box
    • “Eco-inspiring” applications
    • PC software in the phone instead of a CD
Our goal is that after introducing these features in the GreenHeart phones make them spread into other parts of our portfolio. A recent example is that all X10 mini and X10 mini pro sold in the world have the new GreenHeart charger included in the box. The plan is for this to continue so that the core of our next-year portfolio meets the GreenHeart requirements.
Read more about this at our GreenHeart blog dedicated to these subjects, thanks to Maria, Mats and Daniel in our Sustainability Team!
Feel free to ask any kind of questions you might have around sustainability – either here or at the dedicated GreenHeart blog – they really know a lot about these things and I’ve learnt a lot from them!

on my htc desire hd (2.2) with i bought after my x10

so there’s a lot to gain hopfully 2.2 is comming soon for you x10 users
    hardwarewise its almost the same

  222. SHUTUP MORONS.

Nothing is available yet, and will not be available till November, perhaps even December for some parts of the world.

GET A LIFE, NO UPDATE IS COMING, GO COOK SPAGHETTI. ADD GARLIC, THE SECRET IS IN THE GARLIC, ADD THE GARLIC TO THE OIL, LET IT SIT, THEN TURN ON MEDIUM HEAT AND COOK THE GARLIC, THEN ADD ONIONS AND TOMATOES + TOMATO PASTE. ADD OREGANO, AND OTHER HERBS, + LITTLE BIT OF RED WINE, LET IT COOK FOR AN HOUR, ADD MEAT SUCH AS VEAL, BEEF, PORK. BUT THE FLAVOR COMES FROM THE PORK, ADD MORE PORK. THEN THROW IN YOUR X10. LET IT COOK FOR ANOTHER HOUR. SERVE.

  223. hahahaha poor stupid bandit

perhaps you wish you didn’t post your last comment. So you see f@g you were wrong like you always are! And the update will roll in the last day of October 🙂

    Go to hell s/e hater

  224. The update is here. I tried loading it to my AT&T phone, but when it tried to update it failed. So will have to wait a little bit longer. The update is 133.3MB, a lot of code, so it should be good.

Let us know what you think…
    panyah

  225. does the update work here in philippines i got an xperia x10i when i was in a cruise at the caribbean

  226. Good to hear the working RAM has increased by 5MB. The total is only 280 MB. Will there be option to install apps to SD card instead of Phone memory? There are apps that are 15 MB like Tom Cat. If this option is not there, we cannot have good to install many apps.

Will there be any apps coming up that will support to install in SD instead of Phone? Need this badly, as I want to keep the phone memory empty with sys files only.
