Android 2.1 upgrade process issue?

Hello Experts,

I am in the UK and I am trying to upgrade to Android 2.1 via the PC Companion software.

The step in which it prepares the computer / laptop for the upgrade - towards the end it asks to disconnect the phone, switch it off, switch on again and connect to the computer while pressing and holding the BACK button on the phone. When I do that (and after connecting the cable to the phone I dont release the BACK button) after couple of minutes PC companion stops responding.

Should I release the BACK button immediately after connecting the cable? What is the right way to do it? I have tried 4 times with no success and i am getting desperate now.

Please advice.

OK, PCC should inform you when you need to release tje back button but it's pretty much when the green LED alights as the phone is then in flash mode.
If that doesn't work try uninstalling PCC from your computer and trying again.
If all this fails try downloading SEUS (Sony Ericsson Update Service) from SE's site and see if that works, it's pretty much the same as the updater in PCC but a stand alone updater and I've found it to be more reliable than PCC for updates.

As soon as I connect the phone with the cable while holding the BACK button the Green LED lightens up but if i keep pressing the BACK button the LED turns off and PCC hangs along with my laptop.

I guess I will try once again with release the BACK button as soon as the green LED lights.

Yes mate give it a try, won't do any harm.
If the green LED goes out then the phone has left flash mode and the update will not happen.
If it doesn't work this time try my suggestions in my first post.

I have tried everything. Even used the Update Service software but the same thing happens

1. I keep pressing the BACK button and connect the cable

4. After sometime the Green LED turns off and the phone gets switched on (i switched it off initially before putting the cable)
5. Nothing happens after than and my laptop hangs. I have to forcefully shut it down.

What am i doing wrong?

Maybe something is wrong with your computer. Have you tried on another PC?

no i have not tried that. Probably the last resort!

What if even that doesnt work? is there any sony Ericsson service centre around london which can help me?

hey hey hey why are you spamming the back button???
SEUS did NOT ask you to spam the back button. they said RELEASE.
once the green led lights up, RELEASE your finger and put the phone down, and let the update do its thing

not pressing the button, PUSH it and hold, until the software say's release the button

I assumed you meant you were holding the BACK button. If you are repeatedly pressing it, then, that is the problem. If not I would lean toward something wrong on the computer side.

This is exactly what I have done - PUSH the BACK button once and then HOLD it rather then pushing it again and again ! When i do it, PCC or Service Update never asks me to release it and it hangs - taking my laptop down too. I have done it 5 times and each time I had to forcefully shutdown my laptop as it stopped responding. Even Ctrl + Alt + Del didnt work.

Problem with the software or my laptop?

Have you tried updating from another pc?

No i have not tried it yet from a different PC. Still in the process of finding a suitable laptop of my fren with the right configuration for the upgrade! hope to get it this weekend and keeping my fingers crossed for the same.

But it is weird why its not working on my laptop though.

how old is it? does it meet the system requirements? it should... it doesn't need a powerful computer to run it..

Something else you could try is to uninstall PPC & SEUS, then uninstall the SE drivers from your PC. Then reinstall SEUS, connect it and let it re-install drivers before trying again.
