Interesting link. A modded version of Google Maps & Navigation? I'll have to try it later.

To install apk files, download a file manager like ASTRO (available from the Android Market). Transfer the apk file to your phone, either through the USB cable or by e-mailing it to yourself as an attachment. Use ASTRO to browse to your file, click it, select "Open App Manager", then "Install".

Note that it won't appear in your Market Downloads. To uninstall, either go through ASTRO again and click "UnInstall", or go to Settings > Applications > Manage applications.

I'm looking to install Brut-Google Maps. I've downloaded a version & copied it to the SD card. Now I try to install it using ES File Exp. I run into the dilema that I'm faced with a warning message warning ... "This is a System application. Do you still want to replace it?"

The fact is, I don't! I want an install where the original Map is still in place & Brut's version is side-by-side.

How do I do this?

The link to the xda - developers website, should give you all the information you need. They have more than one modded version and have given each a different name so your device won't recognize it as a system file but as a completely different program. There are 2 versions to enable you to this, hopefully one will work for you. They also have some very thorough information that should help you get up and running. For anyone who hadn't been to the xda site, be sure to read all the info on the modder's initial post. He addresses the very issue we're discussing now and gives offers some solutions.
Here's a reposting of the link to the page I'm referring to, already posted by "black_tiger2310"

I hope that can be of some assistance to you or anyone else reading this post.
Cheers all and best of luck!
