x10a Debranding Question

Postby brettoAus » Wed Oct 20, 2010 2:35 pm

I have a X10a Telstra Next 'G' Branded handset (in australia). Telstra Next 'G' in australia runs on a slightly different band to other regular 3G networks in Aus, my question is if i were to debrand my Handset- (Firmware 1.6, Baseband 1.1.27, Build no# R2BA023.) Would i loose the Telstra Next G capabilities as its probably the fastest network to browse data on, and revert back to telstras regular 3G network. Im just afraid of debranding it and find my phone browses on the cellular network slower. Can anyone shed some light on this? Knowing Telstra it will be forever to receive their loaded up 2.1 Eclair firmware update.

Next G operates on GSM850 MHz. Working bands currently on my handset are: GSM850, GSM900, GSM1800, GSM1900

No, you can't change the bands, even if you use X10i firmware. However, it's best to use X10a firmware. Also, it's a good idea to write down your APN settings (Settings > Wireless controls > Mobile network settings > Access Point Names > "APN Name").

Here's a link to my rooting package (R2BA026 for X10a and X10i) on xda-developers:

If you ONLY want to debrand, then just run step 1.
If you want to root, then run step 2 (it's not hard).
Step 3 is the Market fix, and I don't think it's necessary anymore, so don't run it unless you have problems with the Market.

thanks for the reply Grospolina, thats good news as im not looking to change bands at all as i still want to be able to use telstras next G network. im just wanting to debrand the telstra junk off my handset. I always intended on using a x10a firmware 8-) can you explain what rooting my phone would do?

To put it simply, it gives you administrator access (known as "root access" in Linux) to system files. On the X10, it lets you delete apps that you don't want, and it lets you run apps the require root access (because they need special permissions). These apps include Titanium Backup, Bluetooth File Transfer, SetCPU, some Wi-Fi tethering apps and some screenshot apps. You can also mod some aspects of the phone, like the color of the system apps (e.g. a green dialer) and the icons on the notification bar.

The bootloader hasn't been cracked yet. If it is cracked, then we would be able to load custom firmware like CyanogenMod, which would let us have Eclair or Froyo.
