Video on the X10

Postby RvanS80 » Tue Apr 06, 2010 12:02 pm

Hey All,

I've been busy converting DVDs to play on the X10 and have run into a couple of snags which I hope you can help with, as I am an Android neophyte.

I'm using Mediascape to view my vids on my morning commute on the Tube in London. The first oddity is that Mediascape doesn't have any settings to scale a vid to fit to full screen. So I've been mucking about trying to get the best out of the screen. So far the best effort seems to be:

Resolution: 740 X 480
Bitrate: 1500 bps
Framrate: Same as source.
Formate: Am still testing this, but the wide screen doesn't like the 16:9 ratio, only using a small portion of the screen to display videos. Perhaps I'm encoding vids wrong, but I didn't have this problem on the Samsung i8910 (which had lower screen resolution and supported DivX natively). Actually the i8910 played every thing I threw at it perfectly, usually in full in screen.

If I could find a way to encode vids to use the ENTIRE screen real-estate on the X10 it would be awesome!

Anyone have any ideas for better players for Android?

I only tried it on my Nokia communicator e90... Have you tried tapping twice on the video for full screen effect? thats how mine work

Annoyingly, with money. Just stick "DVD Converter" in google, then buy one of the applications. I recommend trying an app before you buy, some get v technical and others are more click and convert!

Did you get any further on this? I'm in the same boat, I have a huge video collection but the default player leaves a tiny image int he centre of the screen>

You could probably get a cracked copy of a converter off of any good torrent site

Well, I've managed to get full screen video going, but this can't be right. I've encoded the vids at 1280x720 pixels, meaning you end up with HUGE files. The up side? The player does support full screen vids and it looks absolutely amazing!

Right, flying the flag for spanners everywhere, I've now revisited the issue and am happy to report that you can encode video your vids at the screen resolution of 854 X 480 to get a full screen video going. I've been watching DVD's that I ripped in full screen and it's ace. Better than the video experience on the i8910. For those of you who are able to crop your vid's, I've found that the 16:9 format fits best on the screen.

RvanS80 - You're an ex-i8910 user too? Snap. I wish the X10 had native divx support like the i8910 HD, I could throw most files at that with no compatibility problems. Hopefully, SE has this on their update agenda at some point...

Yeah, I dug the movie player on the i8910 but the sound was waaay to quiet, and the music player had weird sound issues. And then there was that OS. It was horrible.

The Xperia is much better at playing vids once you encode them right. The ripper I use allows me to crop files too, so I get the best out of the screen. Been watching ripped movies on the tube into work and it's ace.

That's the issue, I can't be bothered to encode all the videos I want to play. Dragging and dropping whatever file I wanted is much easier. Really hope the Xperia X10 gets better codec support at some point.

Follow the link below and read through the posts. There is some useful info in there on video conversion. Cheers

The default video player (mediascape) only plays video's on the screen in the size that they are encoded. To watch a vid full screen you need to encode it full screen, which is easy enough.

In order to watch Youtube vids full screen, choose to watch high resolution videos.
