You need to come up a level to find the root directories but first you'll need to be rooted and second as I don't use ES I'm unsure it will will let you write even with root access.
Might want to try Root Explorer if not.

  hehe.. i haven't solved this silent sound problem yet, but now i am quite determined to do it just to show my big brother that little girl can be a hacker too. :D :D
so can master JayJ or anyone help me through it.
i am trying Mr Jai's aproach, copy the silent.ogg and replace it with the shuter.ogg in one of the sound folders.
i have tried to root the phone using JayJ 's link "Bin4ry's Flashtool 0.2.6"
heres wot i got when i ran the root funtion on my PC.

Yeah your right, Astro can't be granted root access so you'll have to use Root Explorer but Google is your friend if you know what I mean? ;-)

The log looks right but to be sure install Busybox installer by Stericson (free) from the android market, it will tell you if your rooted.

When in Root Explorer at the top is some text, it should read-

"Mounted as r/w"

r/w is read/write, if it displays "Mounted as r/o" (read only) there will be a button next to this to the right with r/w press it to mount as read/write.

Now you should be able to edit root directories.

umm..JayJ, it doesn't hv the " mounted as r/w" on the screen that i can choose from. all i am seeing is the path that i am in,
eg. /system/media/ and underneath it, its go this line.
/dev/block/mtdblock2(r/o)

is this because i am not rooted yet?
i have tried the flash tool again, it saids i am rooted..
i have rebooted it...

Look through your apps, do you now have an app called Superuser?

Then for some reason rooting has failed?

Okay, from the beginning.

Download Flashtool.

Connect USB cable to PC and start Flashtool.

On phone from the homescreen press:

Menu> Settings> Applications> Development>

Tick USB Debugging and return to homescreen, now connect phone and click "Root" in Flashtool.
Flashtool will now run the exploit to gain root access, wait for it to complete and you will get confirmation.
Now with the screen of your phone on, click "Ask root perms", Flashtool will now ask your phone for root permissions so look at your phone and Superuser should appear for 10 seconds, press "Allow" to confirm root complete is complete.

Hope it work this time.

hey.. JayJ, sorry i haven't been playing the phone, had a few school exams.

but guess wot??? i fixed it! i fixxed it!! I FIXED IT!!! i have rooted the phone last night. i am officially a hacker now, well at least in my family. i kicked my brothers butt.haha..

i found out the reason it didn't work was because i had stupidly replaced the "givemeroot.tar" file with the updated one.
after i have rooted the phone, i renamed the "silent.ogg" file you gave me and replaced it with the "shutter.ogg" file in one of the sound folders.
and it worked..i have also done a backup with Xrecovery.
yay....

all credit goes to JayJ!!

umm.. now i am tempted to flash my phone to Froyo 2.2.1. :P

just a question, if anything goes wrong. can i use the Xrecovery to go back to the present state???

Congratulations! ;-)

With xRecovery once a nandroid back up is complete and you flash a custom ROM, if you decide to go back to the back up just restore.
So long as the phone reaches the SE white logo screen you should be able to enter recovery.
