Why not go straight to 2.3.3 
I was able to update to generic 2.3.3 using flashtool and firmware found @XDA.
Everything works fine and I seldom get reboots. When I do, I can usually pinpoint them down to App issues, especially facebook
I've never had to root and nor have I used any of the custom roms.
2.3.3 works WAY better than 2.1 and WiFi finally works properly too
Portable Hotspot alone makes it worth going to 2.3.3
If things are not going well, "Do something about it!"
