Xperia X10 family to get Android 2.1 from Q3 2010, further upgrade in Q4

Xperia X10Following a raft of new handset launches this morning, Sony Ericsson has confirmed that the family of Xperia X10 handsets (including the X10 mini and X10 mini pro) will receive the Android 2.1 update in Q3 2010. This is good news as the last official word from the company suggested a Q4 timeframe, earlier the better I say.

This Android 2.1 upgrade will also bring with it HD video recording at the same time. There will then be an additional upgrade in Q4 that will include DLNA connectivity and enhance the Timescape and Mediascape applications. Good news! However, the Android 2.1 update is not expected until the end of Q3 onwards, therefore depending on the market you are in, some may end up receiving it in Q4. Click through for the full blurb.

Sony Ericsson Press Release:

– The Xperia X10, X10 mini and X10 mini pro will all receive software upgrades in Q3.
– Additional features to be added to the X10 in Q4

The Xperia X10, X10 mini and X10 mini pro smartphones will all receive software upgrades during their lifecycle to improve performance and add new communication and entertainment experiences. In Q3 2010, the Xperia X10, X10 mini and X10 mini pro smartphones will be upgraded to run on the Android 2.1 operating system. The Xperia X10’s position as the best multimedia Android smartphone will be strengthened through the addition of HD video recording as part of the same Q3 upgrade. A further upgrade to the Xperia X10 in Q4 will make it possible to connect and display wirelessly content on your television and enhance the Timescape and Mediascape applications.

  1. This is good news, but, will they continue to upgrade to the phone to the latest Android version? other wise it will become out of date quite quickly and there will be some unhappy customers as we are now being forced to keep the phones for longer by the phone companies so this is becoming more on an issue!

  2. it would be nice if this boosts the volume on calls.
otherwise stable o/s and features is as good as 2.2 surely!

  3. end of Q3???? why it takes so long to get 2.1? others are getting 2.2 and preparing for 2.3… should i feel sad or happy with this? SE please keep up the path with your competitor…

  4. The fundamental problem is this: SE is making money from selling phones. So they are not really interested in updating already released phones, they are interested in selling new ones. The quicker the phones get outdated, the faster people replace them with new ones.
    So go figure…
The real problem they don’t see is that by constantly frustrating their loyal buyers with outdated phones, they end up loosing customers every day…So indeed they SHOULD pay much more attention keeping customers satisfied by keeping the already released phones up to date. ( This is where Apple is way smarter and beats SE…unfortunately.)

  5. @Tamas:

That’s the story of all major corporations. It’s a real pain in the…

I hope one day business realize that they’re much better off keeping existing customers happy. When non-customers see that the customers are being treated so nicely they will come automatically.

  6. still there is a big problem, even if we get the update, we will start seeing some apps and mostly games saying “warning! not 100% compatible with Xperia X10” duo to lack of multi-touch support…

i don’t know why SE wasting so much money and effort trying to convince the world that single touch is better! they are really trying hard to avoid admitting their single-touch mistake!!!

they should fire the guy who suggested that the single-touch is enough, and start development on a multi-touch handset from now. don’t waste time on a crippled device!

  7. I’m still OK with my 1.6, don’t feel like i’m missing too much. However i agree that for a top notch phone, it should’ve had the latest software by now. SE is seriously dragging their feet.

In the meantime, i’d greatly appreciate it if SE can atleast persuade Rogers here in Canada to update the Baseband Version so us canadians can benefit from the improvements in call quality and camera performance etc.

    Xperia X10a
    Firmware : 1.6
    Baseband: 1.0.14
    Build: R1FA014.
    Rogers Canada.

  8. @ Sarkish
Hi, I’m a Rogers customer in Canada with an X10 obviously, can you explain to me what the baseband is and if the rest of the world has an upgraded version and how it improves camera performance? Thanks!

  9. Hey people, there will NOT be muti-touch for X10 due to Apple holds multitouch patent right now and Sony don’t want to be involved like hTC right now. Just search some recent news and you will know

however, in my understanding X10 can indeed do multitouch, however we need help from a GOOD hacker. Hackers with skill level like those HTC ones…

  10. For me it’s kinda in the middle, I want the upgrate, for better performance from the phone for sure, but I don’t want to spend anymore time on coping with the platform all over again and again… pointless really if to do so..

  11. what does this upgrade offer?
i have just ordered the x10 as my upgrade and they get new stock in on thursday 😀
does this mean my new phone will still be running on the 1.6 os? i really want to be able to video record in HD.

  12. run adw phone runs faster cooler and battery life is better gives u features coming in update,

  13. thanks 🙂 good to know
will the android operating system 2.1/2.2 (whichever they decide) will it be a downloadable upgrade or will i have to purchase a completely new handset to get the new OS?
    mike if you know help?
    or anyone else
    thanks

  14. back in stock for me today guys.
should i get it or not? last chance
please leave comments and views. 😀

  15. I am really looking forward to the 2.1 update.
I also hope that the Timescape update will include a status update widget for the home screen – the current lack of this is the reason that I use other clients for status updates.

  16. Hey I don’t have the device, but I have a question for all of you 🙂

I like the phone, but I tried a unit in Best Buy, dialed out and the call quality was HORRIBLE. Now is this a rare occurrence or seriously the phones performance? Because beyond Multi-touch, beyond Android 2.2, and beyond any colored changes.. I need to know, is call quality loud or so bad you figure you don’t make calls anyway, cause if its the latter I gotta sit this one out.

  17. people thinking about buying the phone your really better off getting another smartphone get a HTC Evo 4G or Google NEXUS, SE updates are few and far between of ones you actually want and even then they are years to late, call quality is always terrible they had better fix this in the next update, multi touch is possible as proven on XDA, as soon as the 2.1 upgrade comes hopefully this peace of junk will be worth a bit more and I can trade it for an HD2 or something and just use custom roms on a better phone. If you do get the phone look forward to the “great” battery life ^^

  18. Replying to “me”

About your sarcasm of the “great” battery life of X10..
Indeed it is great. I’m a proud owner of the X10 and I say that the battery kicks ass.
Other smartphones such as HTC Desire or iPhone for an example have to be charged once per 1-1,5 days. I have to charge my phone every 4 days or so ..
Last I checked my phone was on for about 100 hours before discharging. I text message every day, stream videos now and then, surf on the internet with my wifi and make calls.

So yeah, the battery life is great.. If you know how to use it that is, cuz you’re clearly using it wrong 🙂

  19. I THINK THE BATTERY IS GREAT TOO!! when you charge it lots for the first time its great.
love the sony ericsson xperia x10 😀 😀

  20. Well I’ve bit the bullet so to speak and ordered my Xperia X-10 Mini Pro (phew what a name) today, so as soon as it arrives I’ll check on that 2.1 update with SE, knew it was a good idea to stay with them.

  21. The question has already been asked but there is no answer to it! So I just ask again, will the X10 mini have the HD recording update or is it just for the X10 ?
    Thanks

  22. Can Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini pro with android v1.6 can be updated with android v2.1 after v2.1’s release?

  23. I mean i own Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini Pro…
    It has Android v1.6…
I have heard that Android v2.1 is going to be released soon..
So now can my phone be upgraded to v2.1 after it has been released?

  24. hey there KWAN. I was wondering what type of battery do you use for your X10? coz it seems like you are using a CAR battery. LOL

  25. I must say, the battery life on the X10 can be pretty bad. And Sony Ericsson deserve a lot of flak for not managing to get 2.1 out there quicker. Perhaps if they hadn’t insisted on such a dumb extension to Android in the first place we’d have it already- I have never been tempted to use Timescape, and never will-if S.E. didn’t have to make that work nicely on top of Eclair, we’d probably be complaining right now about how short or battery life is now we can run live wallpapers…(unless they’re just having trouble implementing a basic, 2 finger multi-touch so we can pinch zoom in browser, Adobe Reader, etc… Which SHOULD still be possible through software, even if the X10 lacks the true multi-touch hardware of other handsets)…
BUT…I’m sure we’d be even less impressed with a poorly implemented 2.1 update that made us want 1.6 back so we could actually use our devices…
AND… I’m also having to wait for the 2.2 update for my main phone-a Samsung Galaxy S (which I got as an upgrade to my contract phone when I realised it was the phone I should have got when I bought my PAYG X10 -because it was running 2.1 already and had true 5 point multi touch)… Also til October…also because Samsung want to get it running nicely with their front end… (actually I don’t have to wait because I’ve flashed my Galaxy with a 2.2 Beta version which is running very nicely already)…
So what am I saying? Android updates mean waiting at the moment-at least until version 3 when there will be no front end systems to get in the way of Google’s awesome reworking of linux for mobile devices… So we have to have faith… Or buy another handset…

  26. Hey guys can u plzz tell me either i hv to buy?a new se xperia x10 or i can upgrade(update) my x10 which i already have android 1.6 ? ? ? ? Do tell me frnds nd 1more thing do i hv to buy the upcomin 2.1 android update? ? ? ?

  27. We are at the end of October. And no signal of upgrade to 2.1…

And they said that 2.1 would be avaiable on Q3.

    Bad SE!

  28. I am so disappointed in SE not keeping their promises! November? Shit! Unbelievable!
Will never buy any SE products ever again!

  29. Well , i hope the update is coming very soon! And then i hope the gonna make android 2.2 or 2.3 Else the phone´s would be outdated !
